Still I don’t think you can let Dotson be anything but on the roster.

Note from ChargerBooster: Since I haven’t been posting on this, or any other Charger boards since San Diego days, many, if all of you may have to disregard much of this, but I think if we do otherwise and don’t go against what has been the “conventional wisdom” and belief that we would regret it. Again Dotson, to me, is the better pro prospect .
Welcome to the Powder Blues, Booster. I remember ya from the UT forum.

^ This. 100% agree, though Spiller does show some improvement. I'd like to keep both. And welcome to the Powdah Blues, Boostah...

To me it says they're going to try to sneak him onto the PS but I think it's a mistake.
I've been clear that I want to keep all 4 RBs but if I had to cut 1, its Kelley. Don't let his untouched, 75 yard TD run fool you, it was ALL blocking, every other one of our backs could have done the same.
Kelley has power and grit, and has developed better vision but he does NOT create, and all the others DO.
We need Kelley because he's the only other one with the potential to be a workhorse, Spiller being the other, but if we go 3 rbs, I'd hope its Eke, Spiller and Dotty.

I don’t think the Coaches agree with this. It’s hard to make a clear distinction on such a small set of plays for each, I don’t know myself. I will bet the COACHES rank them Kelley, Spiller, then Dotson. Can they find a spot for the Dot on the 53 - beats me?

Topper, not sure if it were you that said teams don’t value RBs at 30 - someone quickly replied, i agree, that number has moved down to 25 or so. Truth is brutal for RBs now. They don’t value RBs at the 2nd contract, whenever that is. And that isn’t completely true - the very best are getting 8-10M, and that ain’t chump change, its just not the top positions dollars.

Okay, so looks like RB's just don't get what they think they're worth whether it's somewhere near 25-30 years of age...but good point on 2nd or 3rd deal...THAT's where a lot of RB's tend to overinflate their value, and a lot of teams just look around for some hungry rook who has talent and is CHEAP...and THAT'S someone like Dot...which is why I think a team like the Colts could easily trade disgruntled Taylor for picks, then poach someone like Dot from our PS...

Nobody covering the Chargers has Dotson making the team:

What will the Chargers' depth chart look like after the cut-down to 53 players? Here's who Lindsey Thiry thinks will make the final roster.

RUNNING BACK (3): Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, Isaiah Spiller

The defending NFL touchdown leader (18), Ekeler returns for the final season of a four-year, $24.5 million contract that includes an additional $1.75 million in incentives that settled an offseason contract dispute. Ekeler is out to prove this offseason that he is worthy of another multi-year deal somewhere in the league.

Dotson should make the roster based on his burst which is something that is missing from Kelley's and Spiller's game...it allows him to run thru smaller creases before they close...that said, I've already started preparing myself for him to get poached by another team, I just hope it's outside of the division...

It used to be the fabled 30 year mark, I just noticed this year in particular that paradigm was pushed hard to the left of the time scale. All of the RBs talked about this off-season were well under 30, but a long term deal would take most of them to or past 30.

I like The Dot a Lot. I don’t know he’s not replicated on most NFL rosters at this very moment - so Im not as sure he’s an instant poach. There could be a blot of dots on the market on Tuesday. I’d like to keep if they can but they have tough choices. It appears, again on little data, our backup DL depth may be better than they have been in a long time - those guys are much harder to replace than a RB. 2 examples: Farmer over Dot - i could see it. Clark over Dot - I could see that too. Lack of DL depth killed us last year. Lack of RB whatever didn’t make a difference.

I would keep Dot over Horvath but overwhelming “consensus” is that Horvath is indispensable to ST or something. I have not done the 3rd dimension analysis of every non-starter and how the ST groupings are constructed to figure out if its true.

it’s nice to have tough decisions. some prior years the tough decision was why even fill all 53 spots when we would never want the guys at the back end of the roster to step on the field - eh, amiright?

I think Dotson is this year's fans "can't miss" guy. Every team's fans goes through this ever year, sure that fringe roster guys that are fan favorites will be snapped up if the team is dumb enough to cut them.

He had some nice runs, but so did just about all of our RBs. The 2 dropped passes and the dropped toss are likely enough to stop him from being poached and I expect he'll be on our PS with a chance to work on things and possibly make the team next year as some of our RBs contracts expire.

Sounds about right to me...tough when u have to send guys like Dot, Farmer and Clark to the PS...I really like Farmer's motor...dude is relentless going after QB's...tough, tough decisions...I hope if all 3 go to the PS, that we can at least save Dot and one of those D-linemen...preferably all 3...then put them on the PROTECTED PS along with Hoppy...
