My philosophy on James was find one position for him, have him play it, and figure out the other 10 players. And really it applies to the rest of the defense. What is that saying "do the ordinary at an extraordinary level."
Like you said, Staley had him doing so many things that it became master of none instead of master of one (skill set)

Fleet, you might want to go with a PERMASTICK at the top of the list with ALL the guidelines...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!Originally posted by Fleet 1 View PostReported posts on Christmas. I almost made it through the day clean. lol the minute i take the zero policy thread off sticky you guys get after each other again.
I will restick that rule as it looks like you guys need constant reminders
Stop attacking each other personally.

Yep...not just Staley...but his Pattern-Match Defense, a hybrid of zone and press coverage, apparently was asking too much of each D player...to have to read and react at the snap, based on the O's formation and motion, then the D tasked with changing coverage from zone to man or vice-versa, then to HOPE that the other 10 guys were able to read the same thing...that's a big ask...even though I didn't like some things about Gus Bradley's D, his scheme was simpler than Staley's, and it was also Derwin's best year with us...it's been downhill ever since...Originally posted by Bolt4Knob View Post

The Jets and Pats games notwithstanding, the second half of the Chiefs game, they seemed to play very well for that half. What if he had kept it that way for the entire season. Not trying to be the smartest guy in the roomm stuff - just simple basic. As likm you said, everybody would have to be on the same page and adapt to what was happening.Originally posted by Topcat View Post

Last year, they looked better without Derwin the final portion of the season, before the Broncos game.Originally posted by Bolt4Knob View Post

Because there was no Derwin to run all the exotic looks and contingencies .... they shelved a lot of that crap.
it had nothing to do with Derwin, or any perceived prima donna me first attitude.
It was Staley being Staley.

Thats my strong belief. I am miffed it took me so long to understand just how convoluted his designs were that they required 11 players to read and react and adjust instantly between the time a guy went in motion and the ball was snapped. Staley refused to accept this is just not possible for players to reliably execute every play and if even one player misreads it every other or every third play his defense is doomed and if two or more misread or are just late processing the designed shift and change then one or more receivers are running wide open …Originally posted by NOrvMeNow View Post

WAY TOO COMPLICATED. great whiteboard nerd coach, horrible field general in real life.
Gus was too simple though, his defense required a majority of pro bowl players to work because he just basically threw every guy out there on his own to beat an offensive player. He was a genius with 6 pro bowl players in SEA, and failed everywhere else after that. there’s an intermediate sweet spot between the two idiots.Justin Herbert 2026 MVP Watch

The level of play Derwin delivers, they could get that same level of play from a JAG and pay him a third of what Derwin earns.Originally posted by NOrvMeNow View Post
