17!? Really!? And they got pissed when Marty wanted to hire his son!? Oh the irony...and the hypocrisy!

It is probably more likely that Marty would have continued to choke in post season either way though.
Marty would not have been the coach if Spanos had listened to AJ.

brother. His son had already worked here.

Perhaps, but it was John Butler, AJ's boss, who hired Marty.

Yea, Marty was perfect for a team that wasn't going to make the post season. Once we had a real shot at winning a title, Marty shouldn't have been our coach. He's a Hall of Fame coach - just not a post season one.

Brees was rather good. I would put more blame on Marty than AJ for not going farther in the playoffs that year but that's just me.

I just don't understand pushing for a stadium DT that has absolutely no chance of passing. Right now it looks like they won't even get to 50%. Saying they have a fallback position to go back to the city's MV proposal assumes both the city and county are going to be as amendable as before. The more this drags out the more people tire of the drama and even that support they have to keep them here will dwindle.

It is costing the Chargers nothing to stay here this season. They still get to play in the Q for free, they still get full use of the practice facility for free, and by staying one more year they knock $3M off their exit fee. In the process they preclude Kronke from selling PSLs and naming rights for his new digs in LA and that can be extended for one more year after this one. The Rams are likely to suck this year and LA is much like SD, they don't support losing teams. The value he is expecting from PSLs may not be quite what he expects after a couple of losing seasons in the Coliseum.

I didn't say anything about AJ - he wasn't the owner who took too long to sign Rivers.

Brees was very good, and, once he left us, turned out to be a Hall of Famer. He, however, would have been a backup or cut from the team if Rivers had been signed on time. Two years later, Rivers would have been an NFL veteran instead of a virtual rookie.
