I'm not sure what Hortiz and Harbaugh could have done differently during that time. There was no Zack Martin or Quenton Nelson when they were picking fifth overall last year, and this past April, Tyler Booker and Grey Zabel were selected before Hortiz and Harbaugh took Hampton, who looks like the real deal. Donovan Jackson went four picks after Hampton. I don't think it would have been wise to take Jackson over Hampton. I'm not sure Jackson will be any better than Zion. Some here were screaming for Will Fries, but from what I've been reading, he hasn't done any better in Minnesota than Zion is right now for us. Fries also missed 12 games last season. Doesn't sound like a guy I would want to sign for five years, $87.7 million, which is what the Vikings did.

Just to add - The only two centers from either ‘24 or ‘25 that have been doing much of anything are Zach Frazier (2nd round, ‘24) and Tanor Bortolini (4th round, ‘24). Both have been solid, but not necessarily lighting the world on fire. Selecting Frazier would’ve meant foregoing Ladd. And Bortolini is strictly a zone scheme center, who was considered a bit of a reach at the time, due to lack of size. There are no centers from the ‘25 class that have cracked a starting lineup as of yet. Remember JPJ and Sedrick Van Pran, both of whom everyone was clamoring for? JPJ is in Carroll’s dog house, and Van Pran hasn’t done squat. Neither are playing center either.
As for guards, the story is the same - not a whole lot of options after selecting Hampton at 22 (thank goodness they did!). Admittedly, Tate Ratledge in the 2nd round over Tre Harris might’ve been acceptable, but he also had a very concerning injury history. Unfortunately, the IOL prospects the last two years haven’t been all that great, which might explain why so many mediocre FAs were overpaid recently.

Ozzy Trapilo was a second-round pick and hasn't even played for the Bears. I don't remember anyone saying we should select an offensive tackle in the second round after investing a top five pick on Alt in 2024 and with Slater about to sign his second contract. Nobody foresaw Slater suffering a season-ending injury in August or Alt going down yesterday.
If we had either Ratledge or Trapilo they'd of probably played yesterday! Our depth at OT was dreadful going into the season. And it still is! And I see we are working out more journeymen. Great!
Tre Harris I believe has three catches on the season so far for 45 yards! You don't draft 2nd round picks to learn behind Keenan Allen! You sign Keenan Allen and move on to your next position.

Salyer did pretty good filling in though, better than he has played at guard

Bengals draft...
Key Rookies to Watch:- Dylan Fairchild (Left Guard):
This third-round pick is a fixture on the offensive line and has started every game at left guard this season. - Jalen Rivers (Right Guard/Tackle):
Rivers, a fifth-round pick, has been getting reps at right guard. He is a versatile lineman who could provide much-needed support for the offensive line, especially with injuries to other players.

I’d at least check in and ask how much. Bectons going to be in and out of the line up all year I fear, and Penning can road grade at RG and in a pinch play RT.
