Early on, they could protect Pip... as Alt held down the LT all by himself. Once Alt went down... it was a free-for-all.Originally posted by powderblueboy View Post
Chargers beat KC and Denver with Alt/Pip, and started out 3 - 0 ... nothing to believe there success wouldn't have continued.
As was, they were a home victory against Houston away, to then meet Denver for the #1 seeding in the AFC.
By your very definition there Boltnut, Pip is most likely an above average NFL OT .... but all you really need is a solid NFL OT, most teams being stuck with an OT among the bottom half of starters.
New England's LT was raw crap the 2nd half of the season, and New England made it to the Super Bowl.
Cut Pip if Burke proves he is ready ... sure.
Pipkins ended the season with a 47pff grade. That's well below average.
New England played the Broncos without Nix @QB in the AFCCG. Broncos win that game with Nix @QB.
The SB winning Seahawks had a pair of good OT's.

You are now changing your definition of an above average NFL OT?Originally posted by Boltnut View Post

"I think any team can survive an injury to one of their elite tackles... as long as their other tackle is above average." - Boltnut
The Chargers can survive and prosper with Pip at RT (not that I wish that to be the case).
BTW. Pip had Becton and Bozeman on that right side to work with, maybe the worst center / RG combination in the history of the NFL, along with the worst OC / Oline coach combination in the history of football.
* okay, maybe that is a bit exagerated .... nah!

When I said that, I wasn't referring to Pipkins. I was speaking in general.Originally posted by powderblueboy View Post

A team like the Broncos could survive an injury to Bolles because McGlinchey is above average. Or the Seahawks... or Eagles... or Bills. Probably the Bucs, Lions, or 49ers, also. Maybe the Patriots if the rookie Campbell rebounds. If one of their tackles goes down... the other tackle is good enough to hold their own with no help. They would undoubtedly help the replacement tackle with TE/RB chips.
Luckily, we have the best duo tackles in football... if one goes down, we can insert Pipkins and protect him with TE/RB... which is what we did. Pipkins is below average... and I never meant to insinuate otherwise.Protect the QB

I have Pip as low avg #2 RT. He's serviceable if needed at RT and the rest of the OL is playing well. He won't drag us down. I'd still like to do better with OL slots being so valuable. I think we have to go 10 OL if we keep a depth guy that plays one position only. I'd rather 9 OL and have that slot for other position depth. CB- STs maybe. There's a bunch of OL to look at in TC and PS. Hopefully somebody steps up.Originally posted by Boltnut View Post

OT's: Slater, Alt, Pip, Burke
OG's: Slaughter, Strange, Awosika, Penning
OC: Biadasz
It leaves us thin @Center... but Slaughter could slide over if Biadasz gets hurt.Protect the QB

Yes, Slaughter slides over ... they are probably deeper than ever there. With Awosika, or Penning, or one of the rookies as your backup guards .... OG depth anywhere from okay to horrendous.

The fact is Pipkins IS a low to avg. RT and bad OG, that's over paid. It would probably be best if our new rookie fills his spot.Originally posted by sonorajim View Post

The problem is since being drafted in 2019. Pipkins became a mainstay on the offensive line by starting all 14 games in 2022, 17 games in 2023, and 15 games in 2024, before filling in across multiple positions in 2025. He's a back up Olineman at best, and not an ideal choice for an Oline like we've had with key players constantly going down.

Pip played well at RT in those years, thats why he has the contract he has. I have to discount 2025 as the Gro/Devlin shitshow OL where nobody on the OL could do anything right: I look to Occam's Razor - when 5 guys all cannot do anything right, I tend to look for a simpler reason.Originally posted by electricgold View Post

I understand he's not a desired starting RT but I'm very comfortable with him as proven backup RT vs what the rest of the teams have on their bench (for the most part). He's not overpaid if he is needed - thats what backup proven RTs are paid for. I am 100% certain he is on the roster come September (absent injury).Justin Herbert 2026 MVP Watch
