true..... and we all have to remember how easy last years schedule was..... and on top of that, we played some really bad QB's......... we lost to every playoff team we played except for Denver..... who we barely beat, and Nix almost beat us by scrambling..... our defense was still really bad at containing mobile QB's.....I think the reason was partly lack of speed on our DL(which is why the texans qb was able to turn that bumbled snap into a miracle first down on 3rd and forever), and the rest was lack of discipline by some defenders(like Bosa who many times rushed deeper than the QB, leaving huge escape routes for Mahomes and other QB's)...... you have to be very disciplined to contain mobile QB's.....

I saw our problems as offensive for the most part. Leaving the D on the field most of the game takes a toll.
They have a responsibility to take themselves off, true. Having done so some bench time would be well received.
That didn't happen a majority of the time.
Make more scoring drives and D will improve.

Yep put up or shut up year for those 2.

Is there data that says a QB is less likely to get hurt by staying in the pocket?

I'm willing to bet QB injuries are more common behind the LOS than anywhere else.

Herbert would be a good example to look at.
Herbert's two significant injuries -- rib and ankle -- were in the pocket. That weird finger injury was a fluke on a pick. As a runner he hasn't been hurt. He has hurt others

For the year, the Chargers were 13th best in the league in time of possession by the offense, averaging 30:23 per game.

True. They were #27 in last game. I wonder what the results were in wins vs losses. It sucked vs Hou.
I think my opinion may be more accurately stated as when the O struggled with TOP, it placed a greater burden on the defense.
I support the run game for improved TOP and giving the D an additional. edge.

We were close to avg at yds allowed rushing or passing but vs scoring we were monsters. Points being the deciding factor in games, we were very good overall.
We have a number of new personnel and a tougher rated schedule. So, it'll be different.
I look forward to Minter's answer. IMO we'll be good. How good is the question. I'm thinking top 10 (or better)at points allowed. Colson's improvement could be a huge factor.
I agree with all this. I would also add along with Colston, Eboigbe could also be a huge factor. If his 25lbs of add muscle translates to game play, he could be a huge factor. Like Colston, they need significant play out of him this year, IMHO.

Totally agree with this. Watching Bosa chase after QB's made my knees hurt. They needed to improve team speed on defense specifically on the edges. I don't know if they improved that much. Kennard should help but I think we will see mainly on passing downs unless he proves early on that he can hold the edge. Caldwell and Egboigbe could really improve the speed and quickness on the inside. Can't wait to see the defense in real time.

Many are sour about the play of Zion and Bozeman with good reason, but few can argue that these two are better than average run blockers. Last year there were way too many negatives, 0, or 1 yard run gains in early downs, which works against Roman’s offensive philosophy.

That’s where Najee Harris comes in, who I believe was a big signing, along with drafting Omarion. There will be many more favorable gains on early downs, which will create many more options to keep drives alive and / or allow for more favorable play action plays.

All three inner OL will need to be in favorable downs and distance to discourage stunts, which if not timed correctly by opponents, can be used against them with a solid and consistent running game.

The defensive line is the question mark for me. Will father time catch up to Mack this season? Will Egboigbe be ready to step up? Will the rotation on the interior defensive line be good enough?

I like the draft picks spent on Caldwell and Kennard. I think they'll be solid players in a rotation once they get used to the NFL level. Tuli looks like he can be an eight-to-ten sack guy during his prime years. What the defensive line seems to lack is an elite player in his prime. That's really the only concern I have for the defense. I don't think it will prevent us from making the playoffs. I wonder if it will be a key factor that will keep us from going deep in the playoffs, though.

Houston has Will Anderson. Kansas City has Chris Jones. Buffalo has Ed Oliver, who hasn't received the recognition but has played at an elite level at times. Baltimore has Nnamdi Madubuike. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles are loaded with talent on the defensive line. I would like to see one of our guys on the defensive line play his way into that category this season.

To be fair, we were all questioning the IDL last year and they out performed all of our expectations. I am expecting the same thing or better with this group. I think Tito is going to be pushed down the depth chart with the addition of Hand, Jones and Caldwell.
