Maybe...but rookie learning curve in a pro powergap scheme not as steep...my big question is whether he can push people around in the pros, like he did at Pitt...sandwiched between 2 vets, they should direct his assignment in passpro, early on...

Im not penciling him in at starting left guard...but Im not writing him off, either...

Edit: Guess I should add context for this thread...Im good with doing nothing more in FA with regards to oline, if that is the play...
I think they are done with brining in IOL after drafting Taylor. James, Boze, Zion, Becton, Salyer and Taylor. They have 2 positions to figure out and 5 to battle it out because Becton is the RG. I think James wins the C position and Zion at LG. To have Boze, Salyer and Taylor as your backups is pretty solid.

I think Pip is your swing tackle. I can see them bringing in another vet for competition for Pip at the backup tackle position.

Even at draft time, Johnston was seen as a much more developmental prospect than any of the other first round WRs. He was the most raw and needed the most time to develop.

I'm glad the team isn't counting on him, but he improved a great deal from year 1 to year 2. He's very athletic. I wouldn't give up on him just yet. He jus shouldn't be running go balls and shouldn't be thrown to if it's a contested catch deep.

QJ also shouldn't be running sideline routes...hmmm...he's kind of limited, isn't he?

Maybe they give him OTAs and Training camp - if not, suck it , take the cap hit and release him or some team takes a chance on him but he will cost $4.6m for two years

EDIT: Just saw this article -- pure speculation the Raiders might not keep Michael Mayer, but maybe a swap of picks -- Mayer for QJ. Mayer is owed a bit less than QJ -- since only $300k of his 2026 is guaranteed -- but just a thought - one teams trash for another

I wouldn't cut or trade our #2 receiver(711 yards) until our 2nd and 5th round WR draft picks have actually proven something.

What would it take to get Mayer?
Want Klotz on the team regardless!

I think that is the most likely outcome...Zion may turn it around his second year in this system...his run blocking isnt bad, and will likely improve, and playing next to a center who actually knows how to pass protect should help alot, because I think James can regain his 2023 form in this system...and he was very solid to good, especially in pass pro, that year.

It seems now that the dust has settled, that’s the plan.

Thanks Beach - always some great analyses from you - appreciate the over and above:

Patterson? huh ... didn't have him on my bingo card. I'm betting Haskins, let the winner rejoice!
Klotz? never heard of him - I'll keep an eye out
Petaia - ok, now you're pulling my leg - I don't think they carry 7 LBs and I think this guy is very secure on the Int'l Exempt PS list.
Bridges is a Safety? No Mickens?
Del'Shawn - don't know this cat- will keep eyes out
