The city spent almost $200 million on a library I'll never use, why not spend another $200 million or so for something that I'll actually get some enjoyment out of?

I would imagine you would get significantly different results from these two questions:

      - "Would you like to see the Chargers remain in San Diego?"

      - "Would you like to see the Chargers remain in San Diego if that requires building a new stadium, and the city (i.e. taxpayers) are on the hook for 30% of the cost)?"
I agree, but I think the answer to the question of whether the Chargers are a "public good" would be answered by the first question. We already know there are lots of free-riders in the peanut gallery. In fact, we know that peanut gallery is full. Look at who's held sway in voting in the last generation of city leadership and who has repeatedly taken the narrow view in development of the City.

Don't get me started about that stinking library. I haven't stepped foot in a public library since 1981.

Why not both? It is doable.

People need to also realize that building a new stadium is also an investment for the city. It's supposed to generate a massive amount of revenue if done right, not like the current money trap that the Q is.

I've been to the new library. It's nice but still just a library...a big building with lots of books in it. Money might have been best spent on digitizing the books, and storing them in a climate controlled warehouse. The dedication plaque thankfully doesn't have that perv Filner on it, but it does say "Interim Mayor", so forever, children are going to wonder why it says Interim, and they can do the research right there.

Oh, I know. I have much experience with the Environmental Health Coalition forcing out value added activity to put in single family lots. I wanted to move manufacturing to VA, TN, TX, or AZ but management wanted to stay local.

Just one example of dumb ass, short sighted "social justice" movements in SD. CA is even worse. There is arbitrage opportunity with the border, however

UCSD, SDSU, USD all have quality libraries as well. SDSU is on the trolley line.

Maybe we can put the new San Diego Library on the new High Speed rail line.

To be honest I thought the French Quarter was over-rated and had some really sleazy places. Saw it once and don't need to see it again. Personally I think San Diego's downtown is nicer.

Hard to shoot down a new library, if it was needed. But like the stadium, it's an intangible public good. It's about quality of life.

What a lot of people in San Diego don't seem to realize is that although they have many advantages with climate, beaches, geographic location, etc its competition is investing in improving the quality of life. The competition for companies, conventions and tourists is therefore getting tougher and tougher. Although many will always be attracted to the natural factors SD has going in its favor it's pretty short-sighted to think that those advantages will always be sufficient. IMO, it kind of amounts to resting on laurels. Cities like Portland, Denver, Oklahoma City, Austin, Atlanta, Minneapolis etc are forward-thinking in their development efforts. I wish SD had a big-picture approach (going beyond the stadium), but obviously the leadership has not been there. Too much sprawl, too little in the way of targeted development.

If the extent of your observation is the Quarter then you've missed the point. Unfortunately, that's true of a lot of tourists.

Kind of liking saying PB is representative of SD beaches.
