Contiguous might be a benefit, but San Diego is a bigger benefit. I go to the largest convention in Vegas ever year, it's not completely contiguous and ends up both officially and unofficially all over the strip. It's still Vegas. I think there would be minimal sacrifices made because it's SD.
Disclaimer, I'm definitely in favor of this proposal. City needs to see the big picture for once.

With SDs awesome weather, the contiguous space shouldn't be as much of an issue.
As to the Chargers wanting to leave town, I think they've made a VERY good faith effort to stay here. They could have left five years ago and I would have put the blame on San Diego. That city was a shithole 20 years ago. Now, it's the Arkansas or Alabama of professional stadiums. That is to say, thank God for Oakland (aka, Mississippi) from making ours the most embarrassing pro sports venue.
