We didn't get beatOriginally posted by Topcat View Post
It was the pick-6 and the house call punt return that beat us more than anything else...losing Alt will hurt, but we still have a shot at a wild-card playoff spot even without him...the failure to draft at least one O-lineman early has now come home to roost...
Every week there are games that are upsets, games that are very close that shouldn't be, and blowouts that should have been close. It is a TPB tradition to over-state the meaning of each individual data point, nothing new here. Given our injury accumulation, we need to play well to win against any NFL team in every game. Yesterday was a game that many prior Charger teams would lose. Just this week
Panthers beat the Pack
Steelers beat the Colts
Vikings beat the Lions
Jags needed OT and a break to beat LVR
DEN barely survived Texans
Chiefs got blown off the field in prime time
We spotted the Titans 14 and won by 7, sealing the victory with a multi-first down final drive to take a knee. We dominated them in every stat except "points gifted for no fucking reason".
As for OL - For the most part, the draft board didn't fall well to draft an IOL player on Days 1 and 2. It was a weak IOL draft. Rd3 could be the one to argue with, but only in hindsight. And we also had need at DT and I think we got a pretty good one there. Trenchers got a trencher, just on the other side of the ball.
Omarion is a stud, he will be an elite RB for us for years to come imo. He'll be back after our bye and remind everyone why he was a great pick again.
T Harris is also a future stud but he was drafted as much for insurance as for today. Coaches bet on longshots for WR and TE in '24 and left the team without weapons. They were determined to not make that mistake again. Nobody knew QJ would emerge for sure. Nobody with a brain would expect Mdub to play an entire season - in fact he didn't make it to camp. Nobody anticipated they'd then sign Slayer to a team-friendly deal. Lots of reasons why taking WR insurance in Rd2 was a good selection, add in the fact that good WRs are one of the highest cost FA positions to buy on the FA market. Of course now that it is the only position group that hasn't suffered major injury - it looks luxury more than necessity - again its 100% in hindsight.
For TE, they also took out insurance by signing Conklin AND drafting OG. Fortunately they took out the OG insurance as Conklin has been a flop. We are up to about 4 wins that might have been a loss without OG.
We are scared today about OT. They planned the year with two pro-bowl level OTs and two decent swing OTs in reserve (Pipkins and Salyer). Folks here argued to cut or trade Pipkins. Nobody here was clamoring to draft an OT on Day 1 or 2 - which is now what everyone is fretting about. A notable and well-respected TPB contingent spent just the last week debating that Slater doesn't need to come back even.
Hindsight makes guys super brilliant at times. I wish I could invest my money every day based on stock prices yesterday - I'd be so fucking rich ...Justin Herbert is Elite. Ride or Die ...

here here! i disagree with 10% to 20% of your ideas, and I love the other 80%. I learn from all of them. I will disagree some, such as Slater, but I hope I'm not disagreeable. I know I fall into snarky lulls at times, and apologize - but its more because it humors me than I'm trying to actually insult. I'm trying to curb that improper impulse and more consistently live the Aloha creed.Originally posted by wu-dai clan View Post
A looong time ago Fleet stated that...
We have a variety of Charger fans who come here to lurk and post.
There is a variety of personalities, football chops and points of view.
There is even disparate of perspectives according to Charger history and when someone became a Charger fan.
It is expected that we disagree respectfully.
Not only is cool behavior an act of appreciating this board and what Fleet has created.
It is also that when we can bounce ideas off each other in a decent manner, this board is at its best.
Not attempting to big league anyone..I'm trying to build a better voice too.Justin Herbert is Elite. Ride or Die ...

Very fair point. Nobody can predict injuries and certainly couldn't predict this many. There's an salary cap and a roster limit so you just can't line them up 6 Pro Bowlers deep. Despite it all, we're still 6-3 so the doom and gloomers can just go somewhere else.Originally posted by dmac_bolt View Post

Which team is the good one: Broncos, Chiefs, Vikings, LVR, 'Fins, or Titans?Originally posted by powderblueboy View Post
Pittsburgh always seems to show up when the Chargers are decimated on the Oline,
and their strength being on the defensive line.
Big game.
Chargers have only beaten 1 good team this year.
I do think Salyer/Pip and a bit of help will be up to the challenge.
ok, even I know its not the last 3. But the first 3 all are 0.500 or better.
I think DEN and KC are better than the Steelers. Vikings vs Steelers - I'd flip a coin.Justin Herbert is Elite. Ride or Die ...

Unprecedented per Popper in all his years.Originally posted by Boltx View Post
To the organization's credit, I do think they have done multiple deep dives into this issue. It's why they paid Ben Herbert a ton of money to train the players. The new facility. All of it.
Maybe it's the playing surface that is causing cumulative stress on various joints? I have no idea. There are a lot of injuries around the league every year, it feels like this year it might be even worse league -wide? Big name guys going down every week it feels like.Boze...Center of Attention

NOBODY was or is complaining about what the FO did about OT before the season started.
You setup a false argument that never existed.
Folks did complain about IOL. I think you abused Bozeman occasionally as well.
The current discussion is how we are up shits creek because of the injuries to Tackle but everyone has attributed that to bad luck, not the FO.
Now, we can argue about how competitive the team is going forward. You seem to think the Chargers are still contenders despite the unfortunate Tackle injuries while I don’t.
Here’s hoping a victory over Pittsburgh proves you right and I’m wrong.

From what I saw it certainly looked avoidable. I wasn't a big fan of that guy when he was with us. Hopefully the team studied it and if they saw what I saw they sent in a letter to the league.Originally posted by Caslon View PostHas anyone yet posted a wider field of view replay where we originally saw that Titan defender come into the field of view from the right and roll onto Alt’s ankle? I didn’t read thur all previous replies.

Let me see, Denver, KC and . That's at least 2 to me.
Living off of their laurels.
A team struggling to stay at 500, despite good fortunes too numerous to mention.
Donkies might make it to the Super Bowl .... should have beaten Indy, in Indy.Last edited by powderblueboy; Yesterday, 09:40 AM.

The point I tried to convey is that every NFL player knows about different football movements that increase injury risk. These movements are frowned upon.Originally posted by JOJAX85 View Post

I know you in particular, JOJAX85, can understand this. You state as such, and I know your football chops, having played serious football yourself.
Sebastian Joseph Day, who or what was he diving low at ? No one pushed him. Look again everyone. Was he trying to dive at Herbert's legs ? It looked like he sort of tried to dive towards where Herbert was and whiffed, as Herbert had already moved up in the pocket.
I am not buying any explanation that SJD is 100% innocent here. Others can beg to differ.Boze...Center of Attention
