That was a refreshing site to see, a Charger kicker celebrating the win. gif worthy.
I like Novak as a FG kicker and would love to see what he has in the playoffs...for the Bolts.
The thing about Novak is that he is blasting 40+ yarders right down the middle. It's not just the percentages...Novak passes the eye test with how his kicks look.
No way. That's just crazy. Statistically, Kaeding actually had better depth than Novak in 2012.
Also, Kaeding was much better at FGs.
Except when he got in the playoffs. Novak may never get the chance to blow a kick in the playoffs though he has cost us some games in the regular season the last couple of years. I was a bit surprised that we settled for such a long attempt at the end of the game.
As a SD Charger (2011-2013) Novak has made 49/58 FG's for an average of 84.4% with 30 of his makes being from beyond 40 yards. It makes absolutely no sense to worry about how he kicked more than three years ago for other teams. Novak has definitely been an "above average" kicker.
Sorry, but you are wrong as to all seasons except 2012, which, of course, is my point.
In 2011, Novak was 27-34, which is 79.4%. He is 76.2% for his career. So, either Novak suddenly got way better after he had already played a full season for the Chargers when he hit 18-20 for 90% (even though the FGs were mostly short kicks) and he has become the most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL (which 90% career accuracy would make him), or last year's 90% FG accuracy was a partial year anomaly that featured mostly shorter kicks.
The answer is obvious. He did not suddenly transform himself into the best kicker in the history of the NFL. As I noted above in agreeing with another poster, I think he can sustain 80% FG accuracy, but that in no way makes him special or even above average. There is a reason why Kaeding beat him out. Kaeding represented a kicker with elite FG accuracy (except for the friggin' playoffs). Novak is not such a kicker--just another run of the mill kicker.
Still, he had a nice game today with multiple 40+ yard FGs and the game winner under pressure.
