Waller stepped in and looked great this season. Just like how he uses his RBs and TEs. I think Herbert misses guys like HUnter Henry and Ekeler. That type of usage. He was routinely bailed out by those 2 his rookie season. I put Herbert in a box. I image he has a box around the LOS and we are missing the types of guys that play in that box. Texas concepts and so many other concepts within that box. With your TE and RB. Roman wanted all his guys to play outside that box and you cant make that work if you dont have the time to get it to them. That short TE game from inline and a RB that pops out of trash is really missing from this offense. And its a big part of what Justin did in the past. Roman set this O back so much. Gotta get back to doing the things he used to do well.
Good points...but I think even our existing players, Hampton, Vidal and Gad, could be schemed better for many of the plays you mention...I've been banging the table for MONTHS for more screens (with blocking out front), swing passes (with blocking out front), sweeps (with blocking out front) and dump offs to Hampton, Vidal and Gad. Roman did dial up that heavy formation with sweeps to the left with Vidal a few times, then mostly abandoned it. Why?

Absolutely. I wasnt suggesting that Hampton couldnt do that. I still think we need a baller inline TE that can black and catch. With some juice. Let Gadsden freelance. Thing is Hampton needs to not be hurt so much. PLayers best ability? You know the drill. Less enamored with Vidal in the pass game.

At least stop your HOF talk nonsense while you have limited the best arm in football to paltry passing totals below 4000 every year you have been here. And please no one tell me it is about winning cuz Harbaugh hasnt won a playoff game either

Yes i am sick about hearing about the run game...because I just want the Chargers to have a GOOD offense and their run game hasnt been good anyways
Arthur didn't have an elite QB like he would have in an Elite Herbert. That would be potent. Strong D. Mix run with pass effectively. In boxing, u don't win with just a jab. You have a jab, cross, uppercut, defense, coaching .

You can't win with just defense, just pass, just run, just coaching. Super Bowl winning teams are complete teams.
Football, like boxing is a warrior sport

If you look at the ranking at PO, RO, PD and RD this year
The Patriots are the only team to be at worst 9th in all departments
The next best is Seattle at 11
Don't want to predict next Superbowl

I agree to a point, but in the end, run or pass we need to have a better offense. We need to be more consistent moving the ball and we need to score more points, especially since we probably won't have Minter next year.

A running game helps to keep us ahead or even with the sticks, which would make it a lot easier for all of Herbert's 3rd and long heroics .. well not needing to be quite so heroic. Justin converts an ungodly number of 3rd and longs and even if our D is not as good next year, we might be able to mask that by having a lot more long drives that score a lot more points keeping the ball away from the other team, and putting a lot of external pressure on opposing offenses.

The other thing Herbert could use is just less getting hit. I remember a story Phil Simms told the year Reeves took over as HC of the Giants. He had a game or two where the Giants were able to run the ball and Phil only threw like 20 passes a game, and a lot of them off of play action that confused the D and he didn't get hit at all. Later come playoff time, Simms was feeling much better physically than he had in years.

besides we have to keep trying to run the ball. We invested in a 1st round pick. That is a lot of draft capital to not run him.

Someone like Daboll would be great for the passing game but according to Bills fans, he never had good running schemes compared to Joe Brady, and relied a lot on Josh making plays with his legs.
no, a great passing game is needed to open up the running game..... most teams that make the playoffs can stuff the run..... if you cant stop the run you dont make it to the playoffs...

MM is the right choice because he is brilliant at both the passing game and running game..... most of the old school coaches that are just obsessed with the running game, never achive greatness in playoffs.....

Its a given that a successful running game is a staple of a productive NFL offense. i think we all agree on that.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but with all due respect, it is all the stuff we heard from the Chargers the past 2 years...."we need to run the ball to protect Justin Herbert....can you imagine Justin Herbert with a running game" etc etc ...and then they preceded to produce an inconsistent, lack luster run game, got Justin Herbert killed anyways...and produced the worst passing numbers of Herbert's career the past 2 years to boot

Personally I dont want to see the best arm in the game, the most talented Charger QB we will likely see in our lifetimes turned into a game manager that makes 20 pass attempts a game in a ground based offense. This isnt JJ McCarthy and this isnt Michigan.

This is the NFL and we have a strong armed, intelligent, multi-threat QB who can do it all. Let's not waste this talented gift the Dolphins left for us in 2020. An innovative play caller like McDaniel can design it all, a productive run game, modern passing concepts and an explosive, versatile arial attack. An offense than can run and pass equally well seems hardest to stop.

Except our rushing attack wasn’t that good in 2021 despite Herbert’s great passing numbers that season. So what happened?
I agree about MM though but that’s because he can marry both well.

I didn't see the Eagles have a great passing game during their Super Bowl run last year. Hurts threw for less than 3,000 yards in 15 regular-season starts. The three quarterbacks threw for a combined 3,194 yards.

Hurts didn't throw for 300 yards in any of the four playoff games last year. He didn't even reach 250.

Of all the teams that won this weekend, none of them had a great passing day. Three of the four games were won with the quarterback who fucked up the least. The other one was won by a team that dominated the opposition thanks to its running game and defense, while its quarterback, on his fifth team in his career, threw only 17 passes and completed 12 for 124 yards and a touchdown.
