5 more years for Rivers please.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

I've already said that I believe starting them too early can be damaging.
Do you disagree with SDfan's comments about them starting early?
I agree with him as well.
So we know what should happen, and we know what does happen.

If we assume then that our current roster situation of having an entrenched & so far durable starter would therefore be ideal to draft or sign a QB to develop the way it should be done (with 2 years on the bench), and that TT is capable of identifying a prospect with flaws he feels could be lived-with or corrected, do you feel that our current coaching staff is capable of developing that prospect?

Or am I reading this all wrong, and you think that the coaching is the least important part of a prospect's success, and it's all on the QB?
It's like blueman says and he either has it or he doesn't... just as long as he's not thrown out there too early, he'll either figure it out or won't by sitting and observing a pro.

NFL teams are doing a lot of things that they know is not good for QB. The tenure of an NFL HC is pretty short, and gets even shorter when you realize most of the worst teams, the ones in a position to draft a top QB are often the most vulnerable to making them play early. In the various life cycles of this board, a lot of people who like to point out that the QB start early, usually suggest that is the way it should be, given the draft status.

All the QB have flaws. The team just has to decide which ones can be fixed and I think coaches tend to have big egos as far as that goes. I think they often feel they can fix things that are not necessarily fixable. Every coach that I have met (mostly college and semi-pro) feel they can fix anything, and the pro guys are worse from what I hear (from former players). And when you draft at the top of the draft, the situation is horrible, so the tendency for self-delusion is pretty high.

Well, I'm with you on letting them sit. It looks that like me, you accept SDfan's assessment of what teams have done with their high 1st round pick QBs of late. It doesn't sound like you feel our 1st rounder this year is worth being used to add a QB from this draft class to our roster, and neither do I.

Since I would assume we both think a QBs work ethic and the film room are important, I suppose that could leave a difference of opinion on the value of coaching... Like if you believe that for instance Rodgers learned more by sitting on the bench and watching Favre than he did by having McCarthy coach him... Do you think rookie QBs develop mechanical consistency, make adjustments to their release point, or conditioning, more through observing a veteran QB throw and working on their own, or by physically working with a QB coach who will instruct them?

Food for thought: should be interesting to watch Mahomes this year. How many games did he play last year, 1? So he basically sat all year and watched Alex Smith, got a cameo, then Reid and KC brass thought he was ready enough so they traded Smith. He's got the experienced coaching to set him up for success and wasn't thrown into the fire immediately- could be their formula will work. Time will tell.

KC fans are absolutely convinced that Mahomes is a giant upgrade over Smith. They think he has huge play making abilities and will be much more aggressive than Smith ever was and that their offense will be far more dangerous. I guess we'll see.

Talking about qbs, I really pissed that this team has not made it to the playoffs more often in River's years due to the management's insistence on finding bargain basement O Lineman. Hopefully that is all in the past. Keep Rivers standing and draft D to win now. We've wasted River's prime years.

Yep. I always think back to AJ Smith's comments to LT about how his career wouldn't be wasted and apply the same thing to Rivers and Gates. It's also why I think we should pick and offensive and defensive linemen in every draft as the lines are where games are decided.

I agree with you, the draft philosophy of the team should be that one of the top two picks every year should be a lineman. Not saying you have to do it, but you should look very hard at doing it. You have 9 lineman, one needs to be replaced every year with a quality guy.

Mahones is an exciting player -- for both his offense and the opposing defense. He probably will make more big plays than Smith did but he will also turn the ball over and drive KC fans crazy at times. I think Mahones will start real hot and then fizzle a bit once there is enough game film on him. The game he did play in he did fairly well, but it was basically a glorified preseason game against a team that had already packed it in.

Smith is a lot like Reid -- both really good at what they do, but not really good enough. I guess we'll all find out this season who was holding the Chiefs back.

Like, how am I a traitor? Your team are traitors.

We have great talent everywhere except we need a free safety, defensive tackle, strong side sam linebacker, will linebacker too hopefully jatavis brown was just in sophomore slump and can take next step this season and we will be good at will linebacker.I really want to see us double dip on either linebacker or DT cus that's what we need bad plus a great free safety because that is very important in gus Bradleys cover 3 sceme. If we we get great talent at those three positions our defense will be even better and we can get a superbowl garuntee it. Get rivers his ring the man deserves it and the chargers organization and fans deserve it very badly worry about the next qb 3-5 years down the road there will be other good qbs later on in 2020 and on. We are so close we can make this happen with one more solid defensive heavy draft

If they went Mason Rudolph, I wouldn't want to pick him until the 2nd, and I'm sure he'll be gone by then.

For the most part, those guys who have played in the Pass Happy air raid stuff haven't had a good transition to the NFL.
(Geno Smith? LOL on the bolts already... Brandon Weeden, Colt Brennan, back to Kevin Kolb)

The brilliance of that offense on the college level, is that it's easy to learn and makes it simple on the qb. Then you give those guys a few good WR's who can win some one on ones, and off you go.

I still think it's a better training ground than the guys running the Ohio State/Urban Meyer spread stuff (which has more option elements in it)...

But it's harder for those guys to learn an NFL style offense, than guys like Rosen and Darnold. It can be done... but it's harder.
"...of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Having watched Oklahoma State (I worked there until about a year ago), I will be seriously pissed if we draft Rudolph. Talk about vanilla, no arm strength and not exciting at all... NO THANK YOU.

Unfortunately, no one is going to listen to me. LOL Mark my words though, whichever team Rudolph goes to, their fans are going to be excited about the next QB they draft.

                    Mike.

First of all im not advocating we draft him. He played in a system that doesn't translate well. Most QBs from his school have struggled. I said that. But i will defend my comment regarding his deep ball. And yes i watched his games also. Just because i dont live there doesn't mean i dont get to see all his games.

He had 1712 deep passing yards last year. Thats not dump offs taken to the house. Thats straight deep yards. He was 3rd in the country in yards per attempt. He has a lot of flaws...but his deep ball and deep ball accuracy is his best trait. Yeah you can say he has a noodle arm or whatever and his balls sail on sideline passes. True. But his deep ball is legit. Ive seen it over and over this past season. To question what im seeing might be a little slap in my face.

I even brought it up in a thread because he had literally done it for like the 10th time in front of me. Im not saying hes going to be great....but i stand behind his ability to throw a deep ball accurately.

Fleet, I know you're a far better football talent evaluator than I am. That's never in question. I did not see all of OSU's games mainly because Rudolph bored the shit out of me and you guys also know that I'm no fan of college football. The main reason I watched any games was because people at work would be talking about the games (due to us working for OSU) and I didn't want to seem like an idiot. LOL Now, that said, if we draft Rudolph, I will have to find something else to do with my Sundays as long as he's on the team because he's about as exciting as watching flies fuck.
