He may not have immediate success, but I think the Chargers finally (for the first time since Bobby Ross) have a bona-fide, competent, winning head coach in charge. And he is not a retread or the best choice of a bunch of crummy options. For the first time in many years, I actually like the HC as opposed to convincing myself that I can support him because it is my favorite team.

I like what I see so far from a management style. Solid communicator, seems to have a detailed plan on where he wants this team to go, realizes its not a 1 year journey but I dont think he's willing to throw in the season just because its year 1, positive attitude, I like how he's managing the Teo situation (give the kid some breathing room to focus on football and not the media).....will see how he handles camps and cuts. Will be interesting how the WR situation is handled by him...we have too many...if they dont perform is he willing to can vets?

That said we have no data on what this team will execute like on the field. That to me is where Norval just failed at the wrong time. Great game plan in theory but Norv had but his game management at times just sucked and he seemed to not be willing to really try new ways of surprising other teams on offense. Slow play calls cost this team....how many last second timeouts because we couldnt get a damned play called in time? A couple of those a game really cost this team in the close one's. Can't wait to see what we can do on offense with McCoy's influence.....will be interesting to see how he approaches defensive planning with Pagano.

My only real concern is how he is as a motivator. While he can't be any worse then Norv in that regard I think that is one of the key attributes this team has been missing, someone that can get every player to put forth 100%. How many guys on this roster continually are described as having potential? We really need someone to push them to realize that potential, if MM can do that then this football team will surprise more then a few people.

Personally think the motivation thing is pretty overrated. If the players cannot get fired up on their own, they probably won't last anyway. I don't think that our problem has been motivation as much as we just weren't consistently, fundamentally sound and needlessly complicated, which is what contributed to stupid technique and mental mistakes, usually at the worst possible times. To say it is motivational means that guys just didn't try hard, which I don't think is the case.

To me, it was something behind the scenes. Any thing Norv did in isolation, play call, game plan, player move.... any single decision was no worse then the things that other teams did. It is the net impact and the way that thing were done, that something about how they did things, just didn't come across to the players correctly. Having McCoy fix the culture is what is needed. There is just not that much difference between what the best and worst teams do in terms of scheme, the players they have or the decisions they make that makes that much difference by themselves. But add those things together, add up the impact, and develop the players from the ground up, that is where the positive impact is felt. And I think McCoy is on the right track.

I've said it before, Pace was the biggest issue in the Norv era. We never had any. No urgency...ever. I know it's been a point of emphasis for some teams recently and with good reason. The more plays you are able to run on offense, IMO the better chance you have to put yourself in a position to score.

It can be, but I have seen teams try to do too much of that and have it backfire too. Back in the Buffalo Bills Jim Kelly era, they shot themselves in the foot a lot doing that. They would run plays where they weren't really ready, and player would make mistakes, or run a series of up-tempo drives which would keep putting their defense on the field, and they would break. It's also not a good idea to do with a lot of young or new players, since they don't have enough time to think about their assignments while breaking the huddle.

Ideally, you want to use tempo to control the pace of the game. Run up-tempo when you need to get momentum and score, then throttle back and slow the whole tempo down late in the game if you have a lead. Put the other team to sleep and let them know you control the game, not them.

I completely agree there is a time and a place, but we were always stuck in slow mo. How many times did Rivers take the play clock down to 1-2 seconds? It wasn't all be design either, ton of plays coming in late too.

Then we couldn't even operate a 2 minute drive. What were we towards the end like 0-10 in 2 minute drives?
