    See ya Derek Cox

    Phew

    Chargers released CB Derek Cox.
Cox inked a four-year, $20 million contract on the second day of free agency last year and received $10.25 million guaranteed for one season of utterly mediocre play. The Chargers save $4.25 million in cash but are eating $3.9 million in dead money against the cap. The move clears just $1.65 million in cap space. Cox was benched multiple times last season. He was deemed expendable for a team that really needs corner help. Cox is still just 27 years old.

Whoa! Where did this one come from?!! LOL!

Sometimes cutting your Cox can be a good thing.

            It needed to be done.

Love that T2 isn't afraid to admit a mistake, and cut ties.

Now...we need another corner. (or two!)

I wonder if this is 'it'? That is, the last salary-specific personnel move we make? I gotta think that Clary's agent has been called a time or two. Maybe they're in negotiations with Jeromey as we speak? Perhaps he can follow Royal's lead on this one.

If we manage to sign Patrick and Marshall, we'd have those two, plus Gilchrist, Wright, and SWilliams. I think we need to sign a FA (starter material) and take one in the draft (but no earlier than the 3rd round...IF we sign a starter-quality FA). How many CBs does a team normally carry on the roster?

There is a part of me that acknowledges Cox's physical skills and doesn't want to just give up on him. But in this case I believe Telesco did the right thing in terms of personnel and cap management. Perhaps more importantly, he is establishing a culture of accountability. Both he and McCoy come across as nice guys, about family atmosphere and so on. But if you come in and just...don't perform at all...they aren't just sticking with you bc you're a nice guy. There are consequences for non-performance. And what we saw out of Cox was one of the worst free agent performances I can recall in franchise history. We literally got no ROI on that money. Time to move on. And I am glad they showed some stones there. It's admitting a mistake and moving on. That's professional.
