Some team desperate for secondary help will take a gamble on it. It only takes one team, and there are teams with more salary cap money than they can spend, and a roster full of players who couldn't be backups for us. Front offices who have drafted like crap for years will try to make up for their shortcomings by taking a flyer on him.
You are kidding yourself if you think he will take nothing. He might, but only if he feels some sense of loyalty to the Chargers because of the way they have stuck by him with injuries. But if he tests FA, he will get paid to some degree.
Hopefully, the Chargers have been talking to the guys they want and will try to keep them from testing FA. Unfortunately, one of the ways we tend to do it is let them test FA, really establish their market value and then sign them for about that. I imagine we make the offer then the player go out and when they don't see anything better, sign back with us. But you see the Chargers resign a lot of guys on the 1st couple of days of FA, which is just players and agents waiting to see if some team will throw money at them.
If you resign Verrett on a lot money, incentive deal, how are we in any way at risk? Yes, there is a chance his physical skills have diminished. There is an even better chance that he will simply get hurt again. But there is no way we can get another CB who is going to be anywhere near as good. If it was a full price FA, we couldn't afford them, and we aren't drafting high enough to get a player like him again via the draft.Last edited by Steve; 03-05-2019, 03:15 AM.

I never like to wish ill will except to the Raiturds. But I can't see JV playing in 8 games or more. He is such a tin man. I hope he got some of that 3.9 guaranteed and that he has invested wisely.....

yep, that was my first thought. Curious as to whether the Chargers offered him anything. If they did and he spurned them after getting paid and missing 2 consecutive years, i have no love for him.
