Here's some tape on Verrett being pushed out of the way by a big LSU WR (not Beckham). Or just sort of edged out of the way by a bigger WR. That also worries me. There's some big WRs in our division.
Overall he's got an excellent array of skills but put him against a bigger (thicker and taller) WR like a Thomas from Denver, James Jones, or Dwayne Bowe and he loses easily. Guess we'll have to let a taller dude cover those guys.
Yea he will have issues if he's pressing often and the WR can get physical like Landry did in that clip. I don't see us pressing often with him vs. bigger physical WRs. That also seemed like offensive PI with the push off lol
I need to see Verrett go against Demaryius Thomas and come out ahead before I get too excited. Those bigger WRs are going to lean all over Verrett and you know refs miss offensive PI penalties all the time. That's what makes bigger WRs so effective. They know how to get away with using their size to their advantage over smaller CBs.
EDIT: I liked reading this from Acee...
The fact Verrett played eight games with a torn labrum his senior season at TCU and even benched 225 pounds an astounding 19 times at February’s NFL Combine before having surgery a couple weeks later suggests he’s got the chops to overcome being height slighted.
I wonder if bench pressing is truly the end all in determining upper-body strength. Verrett, like myself, has shorter arms than the norm. That aids in one's ability to bench press. I can attest to that as I was very able in bench pressing when I was his age (maybe a few years younger). But it still sounds good that he can bench 225 that many times in one set. And he did 19 presses with a torn labrum! I'm a little encouraged now.

And guys like Brandon Flowers 5'9", Tim Jennings 5'8", Brent Grimes 5'10", Asante Samuel 5'10" , Antoine Winfield 5'9" and before him all time greats like Darrell Green 5'9 (and no I'm not saying Varrett (or anybody else) is Darrell Green) ... have somewhat proven that as long as you can stay healthy...you can still have an awesome career as NFL corner.
If M80 is able to return, Jason Varrett & Steve Williams will have two "going-up-to-fight-for-the-rebound-basketball-leapers" to consistently hone their skills against the fade/jump ball test in Ladarius Green & M80. While they may not be able to outmuscle the damaryius Thomas types...doesn't mean pagano and crew can't figure out better ways to use their true strengths to neutralize guys like him. And like many have said before...a consistent pass rush will always help any db.
I was hoping Dennard would fall to us, and I predicted correctly that he would get picked right before the Chargers selection. I was correct.
However, I like the Verrett pick...and I like it much better than selecting Roby. He seems like a good player.
Things I like:
1. Speed/Quickness/Reaction - alot of this is just natural ability and he has it in Spades.
2. If he'd been 2 inches taller, he'd probably have been the top Cornerback taken. If he'd been an inch taller, he might have been the 2nd corner.
3. He plays physical, doesn't shy away from tackling and hitting, and played with injuries/pain.
4. His Vertical and reaction time should help him make up for some size deficiencies.
5. He played in the Big 12. There are alot of Pass Happy schools in that conference, and some very good WR's and he more than held his own, All American both years.
6. The last first round pick the Chargers made from TCU turned out pretty well.
Things I don't like:
1. Size...which is why I wanted Dennard over him...Demarius Thomas and Dwayne Bowe aren't little guys.
2. Injuries... he got nicked up a bit in both years at TCU... playing against bigger and faster guys at this level... Just a concern.
He's going to be a starting CB opposite Wright, in my opinion. He wasn't drafted to play Nickel... I think it'll be Williams or Gilchrist at the nickel.
I really liked his highlight film. Of course, you should... it is a highlight film.
"...of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."
I just keep remembering the Chargers were the nemesis of Peyton Manning and the Colts in the Playoffs. The Colts would bring out Bob Sanders and their other short corners, and the Chargers loaded with the 6 foot 5 trio in Floyd, Vincent Jackson, and Gates would play jump ball on the sidelines with little hook patterns, and the same in the end zone against those small corners. I assure you Jason Verrett at his best after years of playing in the NFL will have trouble being another Bob Sanders, yet the Chargers would beat him and the rest of the blue smurfs like a drum.
I guess TT can't remember that. So it looks like we just drafted another smurf. The TV pundits, after we drafted Verrett, said "but he can't play corner", and the other said they must have drafted Verrett to play nickle. But the Chargers already have a taller Gilcrest and Stevie Williams to play that nickle. So I guess we now have three nickles, one will have to be cut. None can play as a starting corner in the NFL, against tall WR's and TE's because it will be a game of jump ball along the sidelines if we try to start a small corner. Sounds like the Chargers playing the Peyton Manning Colts doesn't it?
The only negative I see beside his childhood favorite team is his height, but he makes up for that in his hops. He's extremely fluid in his combine tape, and the highlights show him as a playmaker. As noted earlier, he reminds many of Bob Sanders, who is shorter and slower. He won't cover well in fade situations against the big guys, but he might make that up by taking away a quick route vs. the slot WR (like Welker) or RB (like Charles) in the redzone. I would be ok with getting another CB in the third round that has height for the outside CB, like Desir or SJB, but not earlier than that because of the future needs in the OL, and OLB.
