Favre has said today that he believes he's had over a thousand concussions. Now that's in a 20 year career. I feel bad for him, one of my favorite qb's.

50 per year every year for 20 years sounds rather unlikely. thats over 3 per game, every single game he played. even if he includes HS and College ball ... its over 30 a year and >2 every game.

Regarding atheletes and concussions.

I don’t doubt there’s damage that can result from head trauma but there is also no doubt your brain heals to some extent because all the symptoms like fog and headaches subside and go coaway after a few days just like bruises on the rest of your body disappear.

The thing that puzzles me is we have examples of atheletes that played the same position that had long lives and didn’t suffer abnormal brain degenerative symptoms.

Roger Staubach is 82. Joe Theisman is 75. Dan Fouts is 73. They all had numerous concussions but doing fine today.

The problem with diagnosing all neurological damage that athletes suffer from to concussions Is we all know many athletes over indulged in alcohol and drugs in their youth and some continued that abuse throughout their lives.

Look at Bret Favre as an example. He started to abuse painkillers early in his career and during the 95 season he took so much he had a seizure before a game.

To his credit he said he kicked the habit and stopped drinking alcohol too but there were years he severely abused both.

Actually, there is some medical evidence to back this up. After a concussion, the brain needs time to heal, and alcohol/drugs hinder the healing process:

I thought the same when he said it. It would have to include when he was a kid as well. But I agree with you. A thousand is an awful lot, enough for 30 qbs and then some...

Saw an article on Gary Plummer where he said he probably had between a 1000 and 3000 concussions during his career. The concussion protocol back then was the trainer holding up his hand and asking how many fingers am I holding up. Gary would just flip him off and say 1.

Gary was having issues from what I heard after football, big time... lots of my charger gear came from Gary. He family is from the Bay Area, so nice he got a ring when he was with the niners.
