Montana is having a hard time with not being called the greatest quarterback of all time by most anymore. He's #2 on most lists, and now is in severe danger of seeing Mahomes take that spot. I imagine that is why he's not giving Mahomes the credit he deserves.
I personally do not believe that Brady or Mahomes would have played as well as Montana did in the eighties under the rules the NFL had at the time. Neither would have been able to deal with the punishment Montana absorbed from hits that one day became illegal during Brady's era. That argument usually goes on deaf ears, though.
Leonard Marshall probably would have been ejected, fined, and maybe suspended for this hit, which knocked Montana out of the game and a chance at a fifth (and possibly sixth and seventh) Super Bowl. At that time there was no rule that allowed quarterbacks to throw the ball out of bounds when they were outside of the tackle box without being called for intentional grounding. Unfortunate for Montana, but in all honesty his era was easier on quarterbacks than it was for Johnny Unitas, who is now very rarely mentioned as the greatest of all time, which is also unfortunate.

He might be saying that to keep NFL interest to all the Swifty crowd. He is ruthless.Originally posted by Topcat View PostSo, if Goodie Goodell says T. Swift is a "maybe" for SB halftime show, does the NFL orchestrate a Chefs SB comeback?

He also says QBs aren't getting hit anymore..... like they used to and he is right about that. That is one reason Brady stated why he kept playing as the rules made it too easy for QBs.Originally posted by DerwinBosa View Post

They still take hits but they aren't getting the shit beat out of them like they did before. Not close to that now.

He is right. But most people will say, "Brady won seven to Montana's four. End of discussion."Originally posted by Boltjolt View Post

Never mind that Montana won four and was going for his fifth at the age of 34 (when Leonard Marshall knocked him out of the 1990 NFC Championship Game while the 49ers were up in the fourth quarter), before his devastating injuries knocked him out of the 1991 and 1992 seasons (when he was 35 and 36). Brady won his fourth Super Bowl at age 37. What would Montana have done if he had been able to play in good health until he was 45?

it could be that Montana just really thinks those are the 3 QBs he’d want to start for him. Yaknow … instead of wildly assuming he’s a fucking racist or petty jealous prick or such BS. They are good QBs too.
unless someone here has some examples of him being a racist or petty jealous prick, of course - I’m open to evidence. But this place is too much sometimes … can’t just disagree with his picks, can’t just think he’s just wrong … no - he has to be made to be evil, he’s Satan! Perfect illustration of society at large in modern America. When the war comes that you started, remember that I didn’t care what you thought, I just wanted to be able to have my own opinion without being tarred as evil or the devil. also remember I’m armed, you should probably hit a different house first.Justin Herbert 2026 MVP Watch
