Agree. No shenanigans is right. Could botch a snap or fumble or have procedures penalty, any number of things. Get the TD and rely on defense.Originally posted by Factotum View Post
Disagree! You take the points instead of shenanigans and hampering chances by being cute. Put the pressure and onus on the other side when it's Lawrence not a healthy Mahomes your D would be facing. This is the hallmark of an experienced HC vs one of these too cutsies Johnny-come-lately elevated coordinators!

The winning records reflect the ability to win in different ways... with different personnel.Originally posted by jaguarmanftype View Post
I'm not sure what the winning records have to do with my point. The fact is Jim's 49ers' passing offense was anemic and ranked near the bottom of the league in attempts, and TDs for the duration of his tenure there with Roman as the OC. David Akers was leading the league in field goal attempts for most of Jim's time with the 49ers. I happened to follow the 49ers for all four years of Jim's tenure, and the passing game was as bad as the statistics bear it out. The fact remains that those teams were successful at rushing the ball, with the bulk of the success coming from the defensive side of the ball at stopping conversions and getting turnovers.
You see the 49ers passing game as anemic... I see it as efficient and effective given the personnel.
If my roster has Frank Gore and 2011 Alex Smith... I'm going to lean on Frank Gore.
A #11 scoring offense (given that your QB's were Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick)... is pretty effective/efficient.
And as we know, a running offense will reduce your proclivity to turn the ball over. Look at Alex Smith's TD/Int ratio under Harbaugh/Roman.
Protecting the ball on offense helps protect your defense, too.
49ers went from 16th scoring defense to 2nd scoring defense with the arrival of Harbaugh/Roman.
They stay @#2 and #3 until 2014... when their OL loses its RT and center. They drop to #10 in 2014.
Then in 2015 (the year after Harbaugh/Roman)... the defense is back down to #18 scoring defense.
You will rightly point out that the 49er defense lost a lot of talent in 2014 and 2015... but I will counter with players/talent/injuries matter.
You think I'm arguing that Roman is great... but I'm really arguing that you can't accurately evaluate him without considering the players/talent he has along the OL.Protect the QB
Run the ball
Play great defense

I imagine there’s not a man of our era alive that didn’t contemplate stealing a BB. Remember Sambo’s too?Originally posted by Ghost of Quacksaw View Post
About 40 years ago, I contemplated stealing the Big Boy statue from in front of the Bob's in Santa Ana. I would have dropped it off on the lawn of a co-worker who strongly resembled Big Boy.Justin Herbert 2026 MVP Watch

Of course I remember Sambo's, but the idea of leaving a Sambo statue on a co-worker's lawn lacked a certain je nais se qua. lolOriginally posted by dmac_bolt View Post

I was never arguing against any of that, in fact, I've been a proponent of a strong, top 3 running game which Roman can provide given the necessary personnel including coaching (particularly on the OL) as long as it is paired with a great defense. The Jim Harbaugh 49ers are still some of my favorite teams despite them winning in the fashion that they did. My argument is for those that wish to see a prolific passing game because they will never see it coming from Greg Roman and Justin Herbert will not have the stats that they wish he would have with a Shanahan disciple.Originally posted by Boltnut View Post

In fact, under Jim, I'd be hard-pressed to believe that assuming Roman leaves that Jim won't hire someone else as OC that doesn't have a background in the OL/DL whether as a player or coach. The one name I believe could be fitting for Jim that would also incorporate elements of the Shanahan offense in the passing game is Frank Smith.Last edited by jaguarmanftype; 01-11-2026, 02:02 PM.
