Clearly the trade works for their system since they save time and money in trying to draft a QB. Stafford is an improvement over Goff. Remainder of Goff's contract (and cap hit) is the Lions' responsibility now. Trying to find a trade partner in the first place is a win. They can now focus attention on finding mid round talents to coach up.
Dammit right when the Chargers were going to eclipse the Rams too.
Signing vets also doesnt always work. The Rams only have a 3rd round comp pick a 4th, 6th & 7th in this coming draft.

My picks are JJ3 and Troy Hill. (Also could see Austin Blythe added to the Chargers OL)

It would create a revolving door on the roster because you'd be acquiring players in the middle of their careers. But it would be less of a gamble on betting whether the players you draft are going to be any good.

You right. Going into the future its 7 straight years where they feel their original 1st round slot was expendable value to be traded away. The Goff trade up look at all they gave up. They didn't merely draft him in 2016 in the 1st round.....they they away tons of picks.
*2017: Rams traded this first-round pick as part of the package to move up and draft Goff in 2016.
(first-round pick, two second-round picks, a third-round pick, a 2017 first-round pick and a 2017 third-round pick to the Titans)
2018: Rams traded this first-round pick to acquire receiver Brandin Cooks from New England.
2019: Rams traded this first-round pick to move down and acquire second- and third-round picks from Atlanta.
2020: Rams traded this first-round pick for Jalen Ramsey.
2021: Rams traded this first-round pick for Jalen Ramsey.
2022: Rams traded this first-round pick for Matthew Stafford.
2023: Rams traded this first-round pick for Matthew Stafford.

It also makes you wonder if "WalMart" just bought a bunch of "Ford" stock. Maybe like 43m worth to make the deal workable.
I don't know but it seems convenient - - I mean if the Panthers really offered the 8th pick today and you didn't need to take Goff. Or why not make two separate trades
Panthers for STafford and the 8th pick
Goff and a future pick to the Lions
