Meachem signed a 4-year deal last season with a $7.5 million signing bonus (which prorates to $1.875 million per season). He's got a $5 million salary this season, fully guaranteed. So if the Chargers keep Meachem, his cap number for this season is $5 million + $1.875 million = $6.875 million.

If they trade him, his cap number this year for the Chargers is $1.875 * 3 = $5.625 million.

So the Chargers would save $1.25 million in cap space this season (and $3.75 million over the next two seasons) by trading Meachem.
Trade his ass. For a roll of tape if that's all you can get.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Of course, no team is going to trade anything of value for Meachem and his $5 million salary. In order to get a team to trade for Meachem, we'd have to throw in an extra draft pick. "Hey, the 49ers are on the phone. They say they're willing to trade for Meachem. No, they're not going to give us a player for him, and they're not going to give us a draft pick. In return for taking Meachem off our hands, they're demanding our fifth-round pick next year. So the deal is, we send them Meachem and a fifth, and they send us nothing." In fact, that's probably optimistic. They'd probably demand at least a fourth-round pick.

I don't know the rules, but I believe the league wouldn't approve a one way trade.

I don't think there's anything against that in the rules, but it's easy to make it a two-way trade if we want. We send them Meachem and a third-rounder, and they send us a fifth-rounder.

We may need Meachem. Our other 5 WRs are all trying to stay healthier than they have been over the previous 2 seasons, or sometimes longer.

Unfortunate, but true. I hope MM has a plan for the guy.

Exchange a third from us to get back a fifth just to get rid of Meacham? Are u nuts? we need the third to fill roster holes. Just cut him if that is the case. Eat the bad contract and move on. But don't give up a third to jettison the guy.

Not at all, since the numbers I used and the numbers on that site are in complete agreement with each other.

It seems that you're confusing the repercussions of trading him with the repercussions of cutting him. If Meachem is cut, he'll count $10.625 million against the Chargers' salary cap. But if he's traded to the 49ers before the season, he'll count $5.625 million against the Chargers' salary cap, and he'll count $5 million against the 49ers' salary cap. That's because it will be the 49ers, not the Chargers, who are on the hook for his salary.

But the $5 mill that the 49ers would have to pay is precisely why the 49ers aren't going to take him.

Either Meachem would have to agree to taking a pay cut, which I doubt since no one has any leverage on him. Normally you can use the argument that the player gets nothing if cut, but his salary is guaranteed, so that isn't a factor. He might agree, but it seems unlikely.

The only other leverage a team could use to get him to drop his cap number now is to get him to sign a new deal in place of the existing one. But no one is going to give him a bonus $5 mill + in place of the guaranteed salary.

I think we can probably trade Meachem to another team, but it would have to be with us taking an addition hit on some of his salary. But I don't think anyone is going to entertain that thought until they see how he does in TC. If you are another team, you want to see how he does with MCCoy's offense, and see how the depth chart looks, so if he looks like he is going to get cut, you can get him on the cheap.

If you are the chargers, you want to see how he has picked up the new O, before having to rework al the contracts necessary to cut the guy. If he can be the last WR on the roster, they will keep him, just because they don't want to free up a ton of cap space just to cut a guy.
