Miami redshirt junior defensive end Jaelan Phillips is declaring for the NFL Draft, he told 247Sports. The standout pass rusher will begin preparing for the draft immediately and will miss the Hurricanes' bowl game.
Ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2017 class, per the 247Sports Composite, Phillips is one of the most gifted pass rushers in the country. Phillips' first season in Coral Gables saw him total 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks in just 10 games.
“This season was more than anything I could ever ask for,” Phillips told 247Sports. “I just feel so blessed to be in the position I am now. To be able to have the production I had individually and as a team, I just couldn’t honestly ask for better. This season has been incredible.
Multiple NFL teams have a first-round grade on the 6-foot-5, 266-pound edge rusher, sources have told 247Sports. A recent CBS Sports mock draft placed Phillips in the top 5 in a loaded draft, ranking him as the foremost pass rusher on the board.
Phillips finished the 2020 season ranked fourth in the FBS in tackles for loss – two of the players ranked ahead of him played 11 games – and 10th in sacks.
“As the season went on, I just kept feeling more and more in my comfort zone,” Phillips said. “I just realized that I’m ready to compete at the next level and to start training on being the best I can be.”
Phillips signed with UCLA out of Redlands East Valley High School in California. He played well for the Bruins across two seasons, totaling 8 TFLs and 4.5 sacks in 10 games. But a series of injuries forced Phillips to medically retire near the end of the 2018 season.
