2024 Chargers Draft Superthread - Prospect Discussion - Draft Has Started

I look at this differently. I see stud OT's as enabling a team to create explosive plays... whether it's creating time for a WR to get open or whether it's an OT creating holes for RB's to burst through. I sure would like to see Justin have enough time to use that rocket arm of his to a WR downfield. I sure would like to see an offense that can get more than 3.8 ypc. in the run game.

Our former OC Lombardi and current OC Moore were able to create explosive plays in New Orleans and Dallas. Yet, both of them kept JH from going downfield very much. Was that for lack of an explosive offensive playmaker...? Or did they recognize our shortcomings at the OT position...?

I'm not buying the weakness in the Oline argument.
Steichen had lesser players on his Charger Oline, and yet Herbert went downfield consistently that year.

I'm guessing it was Staley preaching no turnover football in his OC's ears.

Chargers typically won the turnover battle under BS, and still lost the game, which tells me it's a somewhat overblown truism in the league.

Both. We need both. But since our explosive, game-changing WR playmaker cupboard is absolutely bare, I'd like to add one for the next 5 years+.

Bowers no matter what...but...

Nabors tape is awful damn impressive...this kid is a dawg...where MHJr is a smooth operator, seeming to glide through his routes, and has a knack for getting open, Nabors is explosive and physical in every aspect of his game, from running thru press, to contested catches, and of course, run after catch...actually like this kid A LOT...have him above Odunze...and him and MHjr are neck in neck...would not surprise me if a team, who is looking for that specific type of skillset in a reciever, has him above MHJr.

His acceleration is on par with Jameson Williams, but there's a lot more to his game.

you can eat prime rib beef, or you can eat filet mignon. I am not objecting to either but given we have a LT anchor, I’m leaning towards a sizzling filet vs a slab of prime rib. Both will make you stronger. Vegetables are day3 side dishes, we need protein!

Not giving up on the kid, complaining about him not being worthy of #21 is a waste of time at this point - he didn’t draft himself and he should not be blamed. Spilled milk, past spending, prior leaders - all interesting yet backwards views that gains nothing tomorrow. Onward, always onward! (I was a Flowers child last draft - I do recall you were one that spent considerable ink advocating to all that Q was a better selection?)

In film study, I saw QJ make tough catches. The Chargers need to use him better. He needs to get his ass over to JUGGS.

I also noted in real time, here at TPB, that QJ did indeed choke at his Pro Day. He had some drops there. It's mental.

MW's '23 injury and our '24 WR population are huge factors. Is QJ a bust ? Is Josh Palmer glass ?

Meanwhile, I am sticking to mid, late round WR draftees, with diverse profiles. Herbert has favorite targets he trusts. He has a bit of tunnel vision. There is only one football to distribute.

It's a fact that Herbert has been far more vulnerable to the blitz and interior DL pressure. If not OL personnel, OL training? Plays called?
There's no question that the OL is less effective. Slater is the only Chargers OL with a starting grade. Linsley is retired/ medical, Johnson, Clapp, Salyer, Pipkins played like crap backups.

Harbaugh seems likely to LAC but whoever, our OL needs love and discipline.
A top C (draft or vet) and a top quality OL coach that fits our HC - OC and OL personnel. Minimum. Eff poke and hope on OL. We need a quality product.

There's no question that the OL is less effective. Slater is the only Chargers OL with a starting grade. Linsley is retired/ medical, Johnson, Clapp, Salyer, Pipkins played like crap backups.

Linsley out is the big reason.
The two guards have to work harder.
I don't think Salyer and Johnson are able to compensate.

Frank has been OC for 2 years... but you're right, not long enough. Plus he hasn't been play-calling @Miami.
Harbaugh is the current hopium. Things will have be right in the FO for that to happen... money and egos on the line.
If that fit isn't right... Monken seems like a smart choice. Ravens connection and Georgia connection suggests that OL is a priority.
The trencher inside me is satisfied.

Before the Pipkins re-sign, I thought they already had a RT on the roster (Salyer). The fact that Salyer played OT for Monken @Georgia has me optimistic... and frees up the possibilities @#5. With RT solved... it comes down to WR, TE, DE, and CB.

Monken should know Bowers and Van Pran fairly well.
