As far as a trade up, they are out and that's if they were ever in.
Rumor has it they were chasing Zach Wilson (For some odd reason) for weeks. So, if that's true they were probably using the trade up idea to force the Jets to hurry up and make a decision to pull the Wilson trade.
Wilson
Stidham
DiNucci
That room screams veteran adult in the room needed. I know Peyton is an arrogant putz and I'm sure he believes he can "fix" Wilson.

That's just one example, but hardly anyone thought Houston was a good situation before the season started last year. Predictions can be wrong. Prognosticators may miss things. But that can be true of New England, too.
Let me know if you can find a site that had preseason odds of Houston not having a top 10 pick or finishing above .500 from before the start of the season.
WR Collins, TE Schutz. Who are NE's HC and OC? Who are their WRs, TE, RBs?
NE has a good defense, nothing on offense. Their best chance at not finishing dead last is to best the NY Jets. Unless Rodges shit the bed the
chances of that are slim and none. Slim is on his way out of town.

Looking back, those things were obvious. But they weren't obvious at the time. This time next year we might be talking about what a great hire Mayo is, their OL being a beast, and their second round WR being the best of the rookie class. Someone will come in here talking about how Drake May walked into a great situation.

It's not the smart way to think but Alabama OTs haven't been the best in the NFL.

Did Vegas underestimated them, definitely. What they missed was not only the impact of the new coaching staff but how good Houston D was and how
bad the rest of their division is.
Enter NE. Mayo not only is a first time HC, but he's had no success to speak of. Van Pelt is a well seasoned OC. But he got fired from the Browns.
NE is up against the Bills, Dolphins and Jets. Jets appear to be the lowest hanging fruit. But that can all change if Rodgers comes back strong and
they improve their O line and add to their receiving room. Jets D is top notch. Dolphins O is nothing to sneeze at. Bills have been on top of that
D now for the last few years and they have one of the better QBs in the league.
In other words Houston hit the jackpot with their coaching and play in a soft division. NE plays in one of the toughest divisions in the AFC along
with the North.
The odds of NE finishing last with or without a rookie QB are pretty high.
