They aren't gonna pay Cox 4 mill salary to ride the bench if they can get out of his contract, which supposedly they can. The dead money hit can be spread over two years giving them even more cap room next year when needed.

I guess they can keep Patrick. Don't think his spot is assured at all, but he should at least make it to camp.
I said he would be cheaper than Verner and maybe cheaper than Cox. He isn't a top 50 FA. Shields is 26.

I agree about Cox. Mathews isn't a FA till after next season. We shall see what happens

Agree about the NYG method. Just keep drafting pass rushers.

Mathews is in a good fit here with the zone blocking. If he wants to go elsewhere, we can find one dimensional RBs in the draft.

        Clowney gets another speeding ticket

Posted by Mike Florio on December 26, 2013, 6:27 PM EST

As defensive end Jadeveon Clowney counts down his launch to the NFL, he perhaps should go a little easier on the rocket fuel.

For the second time this month, Clowney has been ticketed for speeding in South Carolina. According to the State, Clowney received a $445 ticket Thursday morning for allegedly driving 84 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone.

Coach Steve Spurrier addressed the situation while also making it even more obvious that Clowney will be leaving the school with two years of eligibility remaining.

“I tell you, he needs to go to driving school doesn’t he?” Spurrier said at a press conference in Orlando conducted in connection with the team’s upcoming bowl game appearance. “At least he’ll have enough money to pay for it in a week or so. Hopefully, they’ll send him [to driving school] after the bowl game.”

Clowney previously was cited for driving 110 miles per hour, 40 mph above the posted limit.

The good news is he may not get any more tickets in the near future. Because he was exceeding the speed limit by more than 25 miles per hour on both occasions, he faces a maximum point penalty of six for each of the events, which could trigger a suspension of his license by putting him at 12 points.

        This kid is trouble.

After last years bowl game he was being labeled as the potential first pick in this year draft. He has that kind of ability, but the off field problems make the 1st pick overall pretty remote.

What really hurts him is phoning in this year for South Carolina. If he had played somewhat hard, I don't think too many people would have blamed him that much. But the really poor effort is going to hurt his draft stock, especially among the top teams who cannot afford a head case with their top pick. But he will still go in the 1st round because there are just not that many guys with his ability to rush the QB.

He played all season with bone spurs in his foot(dont recall which) that they say he is going to need surgery on it after the season. That was revealed early on during the season.

No way Clowney drops to the teens, but we said that of Ingram.

Some of us actually said Ingram would fall because he took his bowl game off. The guy simply didnt try in that game. It pissed me off. lol Thought it could have a negative effect on his draft stock.

In fact Steve and I had this discussion on the old forum early in the bowl season.

Lazy is bad. Speeding tickets mean nothing to me.

Since when was speeding and a lack of reguard for personal safty and the safty of others a side effect of bonespers in your feet?

It was sugjested by his coach that he played when he wanted to this year. I doubt his love for the game and personal disapline, not his potential.

You can explain his poor play somewhat on the bone spurs, but supposedly there is a big rift between him and his coaches and that his attitude has not been good since the end of last year.

Personally, I would have to think if the guy had a really piss poor season, he might entertain the thought of coming back for another year. But Clowney evidently has been talking about coming out all along. He is certainly a great athlete, but he is still very raw as a DE, and would have a lot of learning to do to become an OLB, which is probably his best spot, provided he can handle the mental side of things. I think a lot of the great athletes who come out early end up struggling because they lack the fundamental skills that allow them to hold their own vs NFL players. I still think Clowney is by far the #1 athlete in this draft, but I wouldn't necessarily take him very high because he just doesn't seem that serious about his craft.
