Looking at the measurables of the RBs the perfect fit is a RB that can also contribute as a returner as a receiver out of the backfield a pass protector the is more stout than Ekeler at 200#s and is either faster shiftier or bigger read more of a thumper than Gordon is. I wish they had the three cone drills for all the above but they do not. I'm liking Penny's fit but gall darn it I hate drafting a raider fan!

They are going to get something like 65 tackles, and probably 1 sack and maybe 1 int. That's a good use of a 1st round pick. After we ditch Perryman, because a 1st round LB would be the only one worth paying, would get up to a couple 2-5 sacks, maybe 3-4 int and 1 or 2 fumble recovery. Or we can get 80-90% of that production with a later round pick, or a street FA LB who is a June 1st cut. The difference between a top LB and the average one is pretty small. Spending a top pick and ton of money for an ILB is simply not worth it.
Guessing getting 80-90% production from a late round pick or street FA looks a lot like last season, when Perryman missed nine games and our run D was almost dead last. Just cannot agree the difference between a top LB and an average one is that small, not after last season.

Another LEO rush LB to sub with Ingram and Bosa (and McCain) are just another way to rotate the rushers. But if we draft him, he isn't going to play LB, he would be a pass rusher 1st, a "starting" (what a fucking joke that term is) LB.
So who would be in our wheelhouse for an Otto lb? Edmonds and Smith but if they are gone what about Harold Landry?

I think the Chargers are targeting Nwosa for that.

There are LBs that play a full compliment of snaps in similar defenses. I dont think using a 1st rounder on a legit LB is a bad move. Sure these guys on my list were steals but some were high picks and most play important roles on their teams. I wouldn't want to use a 1st rounder on a 300 snap player either i just dont happen to think thats all we would get from a Smith, Vander Esch or Edmunds type. I cant sit here and say these guys would get very few snaps based off what we did last year because i think the goal is to not do what we did last year. The goal is to get better. Maybe we were in nickle and dime so much because our Safeties were better than our LBs. Also I dont trust Perryman at all. Like Verrett i almost dont even consider them players on the team. Ive moved on emotionally. Perryman can be complimentary type but i think any of these big 3 LBs we could build around. I think Smith could be a Kuechly type. Edmunds an Anthony Barr type. Vander Esch gets the Urlacher comparison im not sure i see that. I see some Chad Greenway. The guy plays the run and drops back in zone better than most. There is no denying that teams that are the best in the league on D have stud 1st round LBs they build around and play a full compliment of snaps. And if some were to get redrafted would go in the first couple rounds. I understand based off of the nickel and dime we run that it would be easy to expect a LB not to get many snaps....but i dont think Bradley wants to keep doing that if we can get a LB that stays out there on pass downs. I dont think Perryman is even going to be resigned. Especially if he goes down again. Most of our packages require at least 1 LB and i think the top end of the LB class this yea has guys with a ton of speed and skills to stay on the field. Just my take.

Based off last years snap counts does it also not make sense to pass on a DT in the first round? I mean its possible the best position to draft based on snap totals will be Safety or CB. But our secondary is pretty strong and our front seven is terrible. If a first round pick helps us shore up the run game im all for it. I also dont want to keep seeing Bosa and Ingram getting so much attention. We need guy inside and LBs that can shoot gaps and force teams to use blockers.

I like the top 4 LBs in this draft class because they all bring something that would greatly help this team. And at minimum i see 600+ snaps. The same most likely goes for a rookie DT. thats probably the same snap totals for a first round DT. James or Harrison at Safety probably give us more value based on snaps but at this point this defense is ready for its last phase of building imo. And thats DT/LB/S. We have got to focus on the D.

A few of us wanted Barnett and Reddick last year...did they get a bunch of snaps? I know the positions are'nt the same but still we are talking about snap counts and value. And going over recent drafts its not like we have had a lot of LBs that are non-pass rush types. Its been a while since we have this many frontline traditional linebackers that can move like this. Edmunds and Vander Esch are not just one trick ponys imo. I like these 2 the most. I see guys that can set an edge...rush a passer...play the run etc. Just do it all. I tghink those 2 can upgrade at Otto and even ILB or the weakside. Thats how versatile they are as athletes imo. Evans and Smith are more ILB types that are quick to fill gaps in the run game with not much experience in the pass game. But id still take them in a heartbeat even if they only saw 500 snaps. Evans can get after a QB though so he could be a menace rushing the passer. He just flies through lanes to a QB.

Sorry I was thinking round 1, thinking that the 1st pick will be DT or LB as I don't believe the safety will be there.
