Yes we will be picking late but when we do draft a QB in the first, we can trade up. There is a nice class coming next year and we don't need to go to #1.

Hearing the Redskins are interested in Rosen if available since Smith won't play next year and may be done, and their owner will give up more than we will. Rosen would start right away so they would probaby give up pick #15 in this draft.
Think he was referring to the report that a 3rd was the considered compensation for Rosen. If this is true then I would be interested if our staff believes in his mental makeup because the physical tools are there.

        I haven't heard that.
Just the Redskins thing yesterday and why not? They would be picking a QB in this draft anyways so give up #15 for a QB that would be #1 in this one.

Snyder is gonna outbid us even if he only gives up a second. But if I were him, I'd give up my #15 if that's what it took to be the winning bidder since Colt McCoy is my #1 QB and at 15 he is otherwise stuck reaching for Dan Jones or Grier.

            Juan Thornhill

He has played Cb for most of his college career and has been used as sort of a hybrid CB/S this year. He is getting a lot of attention because of his explosive measurables, but to think of him like that is kinda missing the point in this kid. He is a smart player, not necessarily a guy who relies on his athleticism. But when he really reads things, the explosive measureables flash and he is a sight to see.

Pros - He is at his best as a man off coverage and reads the route as it develops. He is actually a good enough coverage guy to consider as a CB, even though his body has developed like a S. He is not huge, just has gotten more developed because he was kinda skinny in his early college career. He has speed and quickness and is pretty athletic. He reads routes and has an excellent break on the ball. Good hands for the int and likes to hit. Not a thug in the secondary, can be an enforcer, but likes to let receivers know they are in his area, but makes sure he isn't stupid about it. In the games I watched him, he got a lot more confident as the game went on (Miami, Indiana, Ohio). To me, he is raw, but that means he has a lot of upside. He is a former basketball guy who has not played a ton of football, and it shows in some of his game. The Virginia secondary doesn't give up much cheap stuff, but he needs a lot of work on technique (tackling and shedding). When he reads plays correctly, it is like he is shot out of a cannon or is a man on a mission. Is not really around the ball that much, but if a QB makes a bad throw around him, and he can get his hands on it, he doesn't leave the play on the field. IN the Miami game this year, he was only around a couple of bad throws but got 2 int.

Cons- poor open field tackler. Doesn't wrap up, just dives at runners legs. He is enthusiastic enough, but he just throws his body around, which may go back to his body being kinda skinny early on, that is is still learning to use his strength. When he does wrap up, and use his upper body, he does kinda toss people around some, he just doesn't do it often. Has not played much FS, usually is played about 10 yards off the ball, in man-off position. Has trouble getting through the trash to find the ball, probably because he has been used at CB, SS, and FS, and when he lines up at S, he is gets used in the box and in the deep coverage. Virginia also plays the boundary/field stuff in their coverages that is so popular in college ball, so it looks like he just needs more exposure to finding the ball and reading offenses to find ball carriers. Very raw, but enthusiastic, who does things well some of the time, but has some bad habits to break. Not really ideal size. Not small, but not as tall or as muscular as some teams like their S these days. He is not going to be one of these in the box S who can play dime LB, even though that is how Virginia used him (mostly).

Got lit up in one game where they asked him to play a lot of press coverage, the other games they let him play-off, and he didn't get thrown at much, and when he did made the other teams pay. Is used in some 2 deep coverages, but is not asked to sit in the single high position and just break on the ball. This kid would not be able to step in and start from day 1 as a FS, but I think he would be an excellent developmental pick. While I say he won't start right away, I think he is a smart enough player he could win the starting FS job fairly quick. The big thing is I am projecting him a lot, since I haven't seen him play the single high. He looks like he has the skills, but that is just not a coverage that Virginia uses. Even if he is a bust as a deep S, he could probably develop into a starting CB for us. His best football is ahead of him, but he has some development to do as a tackler. this is the kind of player I would bring in for a visit and see how much film he has watched. He is the kind of player that sometimes really excels as a pro if they can handle to the mental side of being in the NFL. If you draft him, you just tell him this is your position, and just rep him as much as you can and coach him hard. He could be a great player

I noticed that the Chargers were one of the teams that interviewed Murray. Idk if y'all already talked about this, but I hope to God that they do not draft him. He is not the next Russel Wilson or Drew Brees or whatever and will have major problems in the league imo. It's not even just his height, I question his leadership and how much he even wants to play football. Holes in skill aspect of his game as well.

As someone mentioned on Chargers reddit, bringing in black QBs has been somewhat of a trend since Lynn has gotten hired whether it's Geno Smith or Cardale Jones or whoever. Both Smith and Jones looked awful in pre season and yet Lynn still kept them on the roster but luckily Rivers didn't get injured .

I hope that same mindset isn't used to draft Murray even if he drops to the Chargers in the first round. There's far too many holes on the roster to be drafting a QB and Murray isn't a can't miss prospect. There's QBs attainable in the mid rounds of the draft who they can look at as potential successor to Rivers but Murray ain't it. I mean just watch this interview, and tell me this guy can be the leader of an NFL offense!

Tom Telesco’s Results in 9 years as Chargers GM:

                  - 69-74 record
                  - 0 division titles in 9 yrs as GM
                  - Worst record among all active GMs with same tenure
                  - 6th worst winning percentage among all active GMs overall
                  - 2 playoff wins despite elite QB all 9 yrs
                  - Team still has the same weaknesses (Oline and run defense) that it had when hired as GM in 2013
                  - Consistently puts together horrible depth, expects starters to never miss games

granted he might not be the second coming of either Russell Wilson or Brees, albeit guessing he's a tad better than a Dak Prescott and maybe not quite as good as say Baker Mayfield, and.... do think he's gonna pan out as a No. 1 overall franchise QB.

re: Cardale/Geno.... think that's comparing apples to oranges and not really much in the way of fair shakes, and on a lot of levels.

I'll I can say is watch tape my good sir. Watch UT tape of him as a RB at his size, crazy skillset. Watch him in his lone season/1st season playing WR at Baylor, again crazy skillset. His potential is off the charts!

Here is a good history of his college career and why certain decisions he made to leave UT and playing as an RB.

Hurd was a five-star running back recruit who ranked among the top 10 players in the country at his position despite playing in just one game as a senior due to a shoulder injury (he was Tennessee's Mr. Football in 2012 with 3,357 rushing yards). As a true freshman at Tennessee, Hurd led the Volunteers in rushing (190-899-4.7, 5 TDs) and also contributed as a receiver (35-221-6.3, 2 TDs) while starting 9 of 13 games played. He made an impact in his first bowl game, rushing for 122 yards and two scores against Iowa in the TaxSlayer.com Bowl. He was a second-team All-SEC pick as a sophomore, starting all 13 games, again leading his team in rushing (277-1,288-4.6-12), being active in the passing game (22-190-8.6), and excelling in the postseason (Outback Bowl MVP with 24-130-5.4, TD vs. Northwestern). Things began to change in 2016 when Hurd started the first seven games of the year (112-4541-3.7, three TD) but suffered a concussion. He approached his coaches about a position change due to the head injury, and when they declined to move him, Hurd decided to transfer. Baylor accepted him into the fold in 2017, and he sat out the year while learning the wideout position. Coaches used him as a running back on occasion (48-209-4.4, three TD) during his senior season, but he won the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year award because he led the Bears in receiving (69-946-13.7, four TDs) while starting 11 of 12 games played. Hurd had a procedure on his knee in December, missing his team's bowl appearance.
I know who Hurd is. He will be a nice mid round upside value pick. I highly doubt is he going to be a top 10 Wr drafted and should be a nice guy to target on day 3 IMO. My previous comment was making fun of Baylor wrs failing in the pros.

Unless you think the combo of Lamp and Tevi on the right side is going to be a step up from what we had last year, AND Okung has at least 2 to 3 more solid years left as the blind side protector...you have to go OL early. It's a tough pill for some to swallow, especially considering all that defensive talent that will likely be left at 28...I mean, there are defensive players that will be taken late in the first, early second, that will be every bit the pros that the players picked in the top half ot the first will be.

But look at the bright side...thanks to all the talented defenders, and the annual reach for QBs that is sure to happen before we pick, we could see a top 2 or 3 Tackle prospect fall to us.

On the other hand, the FA pool for Olinemen is weak...and this may force other teams to scoop up those olinemen in the draft before we pick. That may net us an outstanding defensive prospect, but we will have to hope for a vet released late in FA, comparable to Pouncey, to help us out.

Me....love to go defense in the first...but unless we feel we have the guys already here to enable the line play to take a step up this year...our first pick is probably our only opportunity to change that situation.....I just don't see us improving over what we have with what is currently available in FA or day 2 of the draft.

                          id consider a 3rd
I would not favor that approach. Rosen has not impressed me so far (granted, only one season and with a bad team) and I do not see the wisdom in having a QB sit for his entire or virtually his entire rookie contract behind Rivers.

Also, the Chargers are a Super Bowl contender. Trading draft picks that could be used to put the final touches on a potential Super Bowl team also makes no sense to me.

That said, I favor the Chargers being all in on Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 draft.
