They dissect potential trades very well and know NBA and college players to the point that I hit those boards before I go to the media "expert" reports...
Not sure how much more of the Jim Buss era I can take.

So the Padres have officially tanked after being so close to first. 8 game losing streak and counting. Now we lost Grandal to a knee injury. Nolasco traded to the Dodgers (fuck those guys).

I had low expectations for this season and expected them to finish last or close to last so it's not a real surprise. Sometimes you just get what you pay for.

I just wish they hadn't of gotten my hopes up with that stretch of good games.

I was pleasantly surprised by that stretch, but thought they were playing over their heads.

I don't think they were playing over their heads at all. They were playing up to their capabilities, except for Headley mired in his slump. I think Blanks is a legitimate hitter. His swing is sweet, short and compact and powerful. He still has to learn to lay off that low and away slider out of the zone, but that comes with consistent at bats and pitch recognition. I think Cabrera is the real deal. We could see his athleticism even way back when he was rule five. He's finally learned the mental aspects of the game, and it's paying off big time. Gotta give KT credit for that pick up and hanging with him when they had to keep him on the big club for that rule 5 year. I really like Forsythe and I think he can become a great utility infielder and the option for when someone gets hurt. I'm not such a big fan of Amarista, but I'd have to have a clearly better player before I move him. Ciriaco I would move once I see that Forsythe could handle SS if Cabrera gets hurt. So if we get to the point where chances for a playoff spot are nil, I would put Forsythe in there and see what he can do.

I'm bummed that Liriano had that TJ surgery. I was really looking forward to seeing if he could cut it in RF this year. But now he's set back for at least a year, I'd say. Good think Blanks came in to take that spot. I think Quentin is doing a great job this year. The changes they made in his batting stance look to have really helped him with his knee problems and he seems to be making a lot more contact being upright like that.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Rivera hits, now that he's been called up. Frankly, Grandal has never impressed me that much, and while I'm sorry to see that he got hurt so badly, I don't mind seeing what Rivera can do. I know he's been in the league and minors for years, but hopefully he's figured it out. Having a guy like that proving that he can handle the glove and staff and hit will make for nice trade bait in the off season.

A lot of people don't seem to like Denorfia, but he's a great fifth OF, IMO, and if Maybin can come back with a healthy wrist, we could have a very nice OF next year with Denorfia rotating in to give everyone plenty of rest when the season starts to drag after the first couple of months. I think there's not a lot of doubt that Venable is gone this offseason.

Anyway, they're not a bad team, and a little tweaking and good health next year could make us a very tough group to deal with. I like our future, and I think we can still get back to .500 on this year, which would be a good year, in my mind's eye.
