Smith makes more sense than maxwell. If it's maxwell, why not just resign flowers?

Maybe it will be Flowers and Maxwell and Verett. I could live with that.

A source tells SDBoltReport.com the Chargers are considered the strong favorites to sign LB Malcolm Smith, the Seahawks linebacker who was the MVP of Super Bowl XLVIII. Smith, an outside linebacker in Seattle's 4-3 defense, would project as an inside linebacker in San Diego's 3-4 scheme.

The Chargers released LB Reggie Walker on Friday, perhaps clearing space for Smith.

Smith has played in 45 games over the last three seasons, starting 16 of them. His career numbers include 130 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles.

He is best known for his performance in Seattle's Super Bowl win over the Denver Broncos, when he recovered a fumble and picked off a Peyton Manning pass that he returned 69 yards for a touchdown. He was a big reason Seattle even made it to the Big Game that year, intercepting Colin Kaepernick on the final meaningful play of the NFC Championship Game.

If the Chargers add Smith, along with Jones, it would inject some championship DNA into a locker room that is desperate to believe it can compete at the highest level. It was also add two proven Broncos heartbreakers, which is just a bonus.

Smith is a backup in Seattle, but Seahawks linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. calls Smith his "fourth starter."

"He's a guy who steps in and plays if anyone gets hurt," Norton said. “He’s a core special-teams player. He’s the same guy he was going into the Super Bowl last year, but he ended up making some very key plays and ended up the MVP.”

The Chargers cannot sign Smith until free agency officially opens on March 10.

Good guy to have especially if Butler decides to mail it in again

His proday numbers were absurd. 4.4 speed and a 40 inch vert. Close to 30 reps. Wonder of he can handle SS.

                        I was wondering that too.

And 30 reps? At his size that's very impressive.

As long as our front three can keep him clean in the base defence. Otherwise I hope we don't pay to much...
