With our need really being the interior OL, I can see us being able to use the top pick on another position. There are often decent starting OL available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Neither Clary or Reinhardt were all pro caliber even last year. But both played at a much higher level then Troutman, Watt and Reinhardt have played at OG and the counsel of guys at C, so getting guys who can just be pretty good would be a start.
I don't think Robinson and the other guy will earn starting jobs today, but if they continue work well together, they are an upgrade based on teamwork. I would rather have 2 inferior players who work together then 2 superior athletes who cannot work together, especially in a zone scheme like ours.
I also think Watt has not necessarily shown he is a poor fit at C. He has shown he is mentally not ready to start at C, but if you watch the blocks that there is not some mental mistake on (by either him or the guy next to him, blame who you want), so he still has some potential. He reminds me of Kelvin Garmon right now. He doesn't seem to know who to block, but that is no uncommon among rookies, which is why you don't see a lot of rookie start at C, especially if they just start. Hardwick had his share of whoopsies as a rookie C too (although not as many as Watt). He should be allowed to continue to compete for a starting job.
I'm OK with looking for starting help on the DL from street FA. I like Lissemore and Liuget as starters and Mathews and Reyes are OK coming off the bench. If Carrethurs can get healthy, then I think we are solid at DL. Not as good as I like, but good enough.
ILB is a mess right now. Teo has to get healthy, and Butler has to play better. Gachkar is a decent backup, but the more he plays the more you remember why he is a ST guy. We also have the big decision at OLB with JJ and Freeney. Both are good players and have had a positive impact, but at their age, they could go downhill quick, and if they don't play well we are not deep enough. I just love the intangibles and role models they are for the younger guys. But given that we have both at the same spot and both are getting paid a lot of money, it really exposes the roster.
I would prefer we sign OG with maybe less money (than a #1 wr). IMO if you give Rivers a running game and time to throw he can do it with what (and a not so pricey wr to be added if you want) we have no need for a superstar WR; If Rivers will get the kind of hits he is being getting this year, a stud WR is worthless...
Obviously the line is the biggest area to address, but a lack of speed and quick separation is killing this team. The one fast guy we have in Green, for some reason the coaching staff refuses to use.
Agree. But don't you agree that the priority is OL, what would a stud WR do or help if Rivers is getting hit with +6 sacks in a game??? Plus my initial post was made last week not today...

Yes, and We need a RT as much as interior OL. Hoping Fluker's leg was the issue all year, because if not we have a huge bust.
