Gilbert Manzano (Orange County Register): Chargers 53-man Roster Prediction

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said on the TV broadcast of Saturday’s preseason finale in Seattle that the team will more than likely keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

Chargers coach Brandon Staley then followed that in his postgame news conference by saying there’s a possibility of keeping three quarterbacks and that Chase Daniel and Easton Stick are assets for the team.

Based on those words, this reporter will project that Daniel and Stick will both be on the roster to back up Justin Herbert after Tuesday’s 1 p.m. deadline to cut down to 53 players.

But by keeping the three quarterbacks, the Chargers will likely have to let go under-the-radar players who stood out in training camp.


Here’s how the rest of the Chargers’ projected 53-man roster looks:

The Chargers’ 2021 preseason has concluded, which means that it’s time to finalize the 53-man roster.

Head coach Brandon Staley and company will have until 1:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday to compile the team that will start the regular season when Los Angeles visits The Washington Football Team on Sunday, Sept. 12.

But before we find out what the roster looks like, I decided to give it one more crack. Along with that, I also predicted what the 16-man practice squad roster could look like.

Let’s take a look.


Offense

Quarterbacks (3): Justin Herbert, Chase Daniel, Easton Stick

Misses the cut: N/A


Running backs (3): Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, Larry Rountree III

Misses the cut: Justin Jackson, Darius Bradwell


Fullbacks (1): Gabe Nabers

Misses the cut: Hunter Kampmoyer

Since the beginning, it was thought that the quarterback room would be Justin Herbert and Chase Daniel, but Easton Stick played his way into having the coaches keep all three.

In a surprise manner, Justin Jackson gets the boot. Jackson is a talented player when healthy, but the problem is that he hasn’t shown the ability to consistently stay on the field. Plus, he’s entering the final year of his contract.

K.J. Hill gets the nod for the final wide receiver spot because of his special teams upside as a return specialist.

Given the fact that offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi incorporates a handful of three- and four-tight end sets, the team carries four. Plus, Stephen Anderson’s upside on special teams and versatility to play fullback is beneficial.

Despite Trey Pipkins’ struggles throughout the offseason, I can’t see the team letting go of him, especially since they’re already thin at the position.


Defense

Projecting the interior part of the defensive line was difficult because there were a handful of players who flashed. Breiden Fehoko flashed as an all-around player, and brings infectious energy to the locker room.

Emeke Egbule would have likely earned a spot on the roster, but the time missed with an injury hindered his chances.

Despite missing the preseason finale, Staley hinted that Ogbongbemiga will make the team with his comments from last week: “Ogbongbemiga will be ready for Game 1.” The undrafted free agent supplies the team will be a special teams ace.

Ryan Smith will likely remain on the COVID-19/Reserve list which means that there will be an additional roster spot. Tevaughn Campbell has been talked highly of and he has the ability to serve as one of the team’s gunners on punt coverage.

Michael Badgley had the slight edge all the way until the end, but I believe the coaches favor Tristan Vizcaino’s leg strength, despite having more missed field goals in practices.

Matt Overton gets the nod with Cole Mazza dealing with a shoulder injury.

On Tuesday, the Chargers will announce their 53-man roster at 1 p.m. pacific. Here is the one and only attempt at guessing who Brandon Staley and the coaching staff will have on their roster:


Quarterback (2): Justin Herbert, Chase Daniel

Easton Stick did all he could to make the team, but Daniel is the number two. He is the second quarterback and will help Herbert. Plus, Stick will most likely land on the practice squad.


Running back (4): Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, Justin Jackson, Larry Rountree

All four running backs bring something unique to the table. The Chargers will try to use each of them in different ways to keep each other fresh.


Fullback (1): Gabe Nabers

The fullback took some positive strides towards the end of the season and should continue in 2021. He should also add another pass catching weapon for Herbert.


Wide receiver (6): Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Joshua Palmer, Tyron Johnson, Jalen Guyton, K.J. Hill

This receiving battle will be close in the back end. Hill is injured at the back end but he can be the team’s punt returner. Johnson and Guyton’s speed will be needed in this offense.


Tight end (3): Jared Cook, Donald Parham Jr., Tre’ McKitty

Brandon Staley said on Thursday that he will carry nine offensive linemen on the roster. These are the players who have received the most play time. Pipkins has turned in terrible performances and might be cut if a waiver wire claim comes through. Almost put Ryan Hunter on here, but he will most likely be on the practice squad.


Defensive line (5): Linval Joseph, Justin Jones, Jerry Tillery, Christian Covington, Breiden Fehoko

The defensive line starters should be fully rested for the start of the season. It seems like Covington and Fehoko have done the most out of all the defensive line. Fehoko has also been involved in special teams.


Edge Rushers (5): Joey Bosa, Kyler Fackrell, Uchenna Nwosu, Chris Rumph, Emeke Eguble

The pass rushers will be rotated and kept fresh, so there will need to be multiple players. All five should have an impact in games with Eguble and Rumph also on special teams duty.


Linebackers (5): Kenneth Murray, Drue Tranquill, Kyzir White, Nick Niemann, Amen Ogbongbemiga

Amen will be the undrafted player that makes the roster because of how talented he is and his special teams play. Niemann has been a surprise of camp showing off he is a tackling machine.


Cornerback (6): Asante Samuel Jr., Michael Davis, Chris Harris Jr., Brandon Facyson, Tevaughn Campbell, Ryan Smith

The Chargers will carry six cornerbacks going into the season but if Smith isn’t ready, they could put him on IR and add another position from the practice squad. Campbell and Facyson could be special teams players if Smith can’t go.


Safeties (4): Derwin James, Nasir Adderley, Alohi Gilman, Mark Webb

Watch out for Webb this season. He has a nose for the football and could be a weapon for the Chargers defense. Gilman could be as well with how smooth of a training camp he had, plus James is back to being Derwin James.


Special teams (3): P Ty Long, K Tristan Vizcaino, LS Cole Mazza

It seems like Vizcaino will be the starting kicker especially because of how Staley laid out he wanted a kicker who will make field goals and have good kickoffs. He missed in Seattle, but Vizcaino could be Derius Swinton's guy. Mazza is dealing with an injury he could make the 53 than be put on IR if he isn’t healthy.

Comparing the four 53-man roster predictions (including Popper's, which was posted previously): They all agree on the same nine offensive linemen and the same six wide receivers.

QB: Everyone except Ramirez thinks they'll keep all three quarterbacks.

RB: Popper and Borquez think they'll cut Jackson; Manzano and Ramirez think they'll keep him. They all agree on keeping Ekeler, Kelley, and Rountree and cutting Bradwell. They all agree on keeping Nabers.

TE: Popper and Borquez think they'll keep four tight ends, including Anderson. Manzano and Ramirez think they'll go with only three and cut Anderson.

Defensive line: All four agree on Joseph, Jones, Tillery and Covington. Three of the four think they'll also keep Cortez Broughton; two of the four think they'll keep Breiden Fehoko.

It's worth remembering, that many of the guys we have on our "final" 53, don't even make it to week 1. Yes, we tend to cut 3-7 players in the week BEFORE the first regular season game. And then, the roster is in constant flux, what with injuries and other teams shuffling the rosters around.

The Final roster is kinda fun and all, but it is not anything of the sort.
