This is so sad. Marty was the third greatest coach in Chargers history behind Sid Gilman and Don Coryell, in my opinion. He made Chargers football fun again after taking over a team that had gone 14-34 in the 3 seasons prior to his arrival. If Dean had done the right thing and kept Marty and fired AJ, the Chargers would have won at least one Super Bowl and would still be in San Diego.

    You'll be missed, Coach.

The Charger family lost one of its great figures today. He defined a short but memorable era for the Chargers. everywhere Marty went the team got better. For us, a lot better. The man had a positive impact on teams and the guys that played for him. RIP Marty

A great coach, and a man of his word. Tough S.O.B., players and fans will miss him. R.I.P.

Loved that Herbert gave a shoutout to Marty during his press conference.

Schottenheimer was a difference maker everywhere he went...San Diego was no exception. I loved the way those teams played, even the undermanned ones in 2002 & 2003. I still think any of his last three teams - 2004, 2005, 2006 - could have won it all, particularly 2006. The 2007 team that ALSO could have won it all had his fingerprints all over it. I loved that Chargers era.

One of the things that he said regularly that stuck with me is (paraphrasing) that people don't realize how hard it is to win *a game* in the NFL, let alone a playoff game or the Super Bowl. RIP Coach.
