Have you noticed that guys who've been in the league three years can now be on a practice squad? They've really broadened the parameters of who can qualify.

It used to be-- up until maybe 2018-- that if you were put on IR, that was it for the season. There are now several categories of IR under which a player CAN return to the active roster after being on IR.

So... not that they couldn't be doing MORE, but they *are* taking some measures to make the roster more flexible.

That is good. I always thought it was stupid that once on the IR you were done for the season. Baseball IR rules were always way better.

Agree. IR rule is stupid. Roster size and ability of other teams to sign off your PS provides enough limits to counter their fear of teams stockpiling talent in cupboards and attics.

Per the impeccable Joel Corry, here is the precise reason Rashawn Slater has not signed yet.

          Offset language.

This was the same issue that held up Joey Bosa's initial deal.

Travis Etienne, drafted @ #25 by the Jags, and signed just a week ago, received the benefit of no offset language, and JAC has not done this in the past.

Rashawn and his agent are rightfully negotiating for a fully guaranteed contract.

I can’t fault him for that. All player contracts should be fully guaranteed just like the coaches.

I don't really understand this, from a team perspective or a player perspective.

offsets rarely come into play, since few top picks flame out badly enough that they’re released during their first four seasons. And even in those rare instances, if a player has performed poorly enough to be cut in his first few years, he likely won’t sign a lucrative deal elsewhere, so offset language wouldn’t help his old club recover more than perhaps the league minimum.

If as a player you're holding out because of offsets, do you really think there's a chance you get cut during your rookie contract? Seems like you're betting against yourself.

Speaking of wacky holdouts, remember Kevin Ellison, LB, chosen by the Bolts in 2009 in the SIXTH round, who tried to hold out for more money? Imagine, a SIXTH rounder!!! That's like the lookout on the Titanic asking for a promotion...

Ellison started for the Chargers the 2nd half of the 2009 season & in the playoff game: he was a decent player. After the season, a cop in west L.A. stopped him for a traffic violation and decided to search his car: found a painkiller that was determined to be illegal. Ellison never returned to the Chargers

Tragic ending to his life; he was wandering along a freeway and got hit and killed by a car. Years earlier he set a fire to a building because God told him to do it.
He was determined, post death, to have CTE.

Injury could always happen. Get your contract guaranteed.

So is this a case of an agent showing how 'principled' he is and the team showing how 'principled' they are? In the age of analytics and risk, it would seem a very cursory review would yield that this is not worth worrying about for either side. And the NFL should just standardize this.

Seems like the Chargers attract attention on their dealings with rookie contracts... maybe the 'token' club, vs. agents doing it with the rest of the league. Maybe McGuire isn't a popular guy with the agents.
