Playing time is earned. His play has been subpar, so no way in hell, IMO, should he be rewarded by additional playing time (which comes at the expense of another player) at other positions. To me that just sends a terrible message to the rest of the team. If he wants to see the field in a more meaningful way, come to camp focused, in shape, and ready to work. Prove you are worth the big fat contract, which in itself should make him feel valuable. Coddling him is not the answer.

If he plays well, he plays more...simple as that. It could be the case that losing his dad messed with his head last season. I hope he comes in focused and steps up his game, and returns to being an effective player. If he doesn't, someone else gets a chance to shine, namely our second round pick. Every game is too damn important to give extra playing time to under-performing players.

It's kind of fascinating to me how quickly Butler has fallen from grace with the fans. Granted the guy had a pretty bad year (and we don't know the full story of it), but he's like public enemy #1 around these parts. Went from a must-resign to fully hated in one season. This guy was one of our best young defensive prospects. I doubt he suddenly forgot how to play football. Blame injuries or lack of desire if you must, but I'm not so quick to give up on him. I truly hope it was injuries last year and not a lack of interest that brought about the poor play. I guess we'll see what 2015 brings.
