No way any team gives Herbert the ball back with enough time if they can help it. So, yeah they were running the clock down, but they were going to try the FG no matter what. If it had been a 70-yard kick they would have tried, and it was only 57 yards, which is right around Carlson's range (his longest is 56).
They also have Carr at QB. No one has brought this up, but if you were Biassacia, would you have put the ball in Carr's hands that late in a game you didn't have to win? Hell no. Carr goes to pieces so badly people get hurt by the shrapnel. Carr throws a pass late, we get the ball back and have time to get into scoring position, so that was never in the cards for the Raiders.
Was there any reason for the Raiders to not try a long kick at the end of regulation, 60+ yards out? No, giving up field position in OT with time expiring was not an issue for the Raiders. Theoretically, they might have been concerned about Roberts running it back ... but it's our ST, so no not really. Another team, maybe. Not the Chargers ST.
The ball was on the Chargers' 39 yard line before the Josh Jacobs run. That is a 57 yard FG. Not a chip shot, but the guy is on a really good streak at home. No way they don't take the kick, even if we do stop Jacobs. Even if we knock him back 5 yards on 3rd down they take the kick.
Then they broke the long-sh run and the FG became a chip shot.
Do nothing, stop the run again like the last two downs and then immediately call timeout: strong possibility the Raiders punt.
You'd have 20 + seconds left after the possession exchange.
Here is what Biassacia would ponder:
1. Make the field goal and then kickoff to Roberts.
2. Miss the field goal and give it over to Herbert around midfield
3. Have the field goal blocked or the snap botched and run back the other way.
4. Punt and pin the Chargers inside their 20.
Who feels Biassacia would have opted for the 50 + yard field goal?
Only option 4 guarantees the playoffs.

Good Black Monday article.
The NFL, for all of its complexity, is really a binary proposition: You either have the right quarterback, and you are good; or you don’t, and you aren’t.
The Dolphins got the quarterback position wrong. After Flores’s strong finish to the 2019 season, they were positioned to take one of the three premier QBs in the 2020 draft: LSU’s Joe Burrow, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, and Oregon’s Justin Herbert. Two are now the fastest-rising superstars in the league; the third is the guy the Dolphins took. Burrow was already off the board when the Dolphins turned on the clock with the fifth pick, but after months of smokescreening and debating, the Dolphins took Tua over Herbert.
The Dolphins got the quarterback position wrong, and while there are a lot of different ways to get that wrong, disagreement between the people drafting the quarterback is a terrible place to start. Reports have it that Flores preferred Herbert over Tua, while Ross had no interest in Herbert. A fracture between head coach and owner, with the general manager (understandably) siding with his boss come draft day, makes the following trainwreck in Miami more easy to parse.

B) We actually have a decent QB that might attract winning talent.
C) The Chargers will sell much less tickets with the defensive shit show they produced this season.
D) The football gods demand it!

1) Staley is HC -- should he be the DC calling plays too. I know other coaches do it like Reid, Reich, McVay, but should he do it too?
2) is Renaldo Hill ready to call plays in the NFL as DC - if not, he should not be DC
3) Fangio is out there. Zimmer is out there. These are good coaches -veteran DC types who know how to coach defense in the NFL.
4) is the organization looking at this as a coaching issue? player issue? or Both.
But the way the defense performed, there should be changes on the defensive side of the ball in terms of staff and players. Do not settle for below mediocrity
