first year cap hit of $2m (1/3 the bonus, plus $1m)
Second year cap hit of say $3m - $2m salary plus part of the bonus

Couldn't agree more. Granted, if you don't sign Mike Williams you need to sign a WR. But after bringing back key free agents - like you said: IDL, RT, CB, RB, Edge, more IDL, maybe one more OL. A new punter would be nice.

My first preference would be to re-sign Williams but, failing that, a guy I've always liked and I think is underrated - and is almost certainly on his way out - is Allen Robinson of the Bears. He's coming off a down year with injuries and a sub-par QB throwing to him so he would probably be cheaper than Mike Williams.

I’m beginning to think, letting Williams go. I just don’t see paying two wr top dollar. And yes, I’ve pushed for Devante Adams too. But with the money saved. We can put that on the defensive side and right side of the oline.

We have seen Herbert have success with a lot of different wr. I think Palmer can be wr2. Maybe picking up 2 fast wr to fill the void of Williams, while fixing the right side of the line, we still will be potent on offense.

Also maybe use that money on a pass catching tight end.

I never had a impression that Mike W dogged it before this season. His issue was availability after slamming his body on the ground, laying out for inaccurate passes. He's not a burner, but he makes up for it with his catch radius.

While I have said in other posts that I think they will resign him and I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I also think if they don’t, they can find a couple WRs in free agency to more than make up for his loss. I like Russel Gage and Braxton Berrios personally. Both have speed and good route running ability. WR core can look like

Not resigning MW is riskier than most think
we can't keep stressing Herbert with new schemes, new receivers, new chemistry
we need to support Herbert right now while we can afford to.
I kniw we're all just thinking of different ways to support number 10 but he needs direct support.
remember, he's evaluating us as a franchise as much as we are him, how devastating will it be personally for him to hear we didn't even franchise MW.

I'm the dude that didnt want him on his 5th year option, if we were going to move on, it would have been better last offseason (arguably).
give Herbert Mike, a real RT and 15-20 carry RB and watch Herbert flourish
