The real problem is how shitty the OL is. They can’t run block and open a gap to save their lives. Same with pass blocking. They are dominated at the LOS by every other team, especially when Linsley is out.
With Slater, Linsley, and Pipkins out on OL, this team simply can’t compete. With Johnson, Bosa, and now SJD out on DL, they can’t mount a pass rush or run defend.
Trenches are the worst I’ve ever seen them and Telesco should have brought in reinforcements before the trade deadline. Instead they hung Herbert, Mack, James, and fans out to dry by waiving the white flag of CHEAPNESS.
even if everyone comes back healthy next year, Telesco still needs to build more stout OL and DL. I’m tired of seeing them dominated for the past 10 years.
For Gods sakes, the last time we had dominant trenches was when Merriman was playing decades ago. How many more years of neglect and malpractice by John boy do we have to suffer through?

Hard decisions will have to be made regarding player personnel, too. Mack, Linsley, KA...all aging and probably not part of any winning culture of the future. There isn't one area of this team, save starting QB, that does NOT need to be addressed.
The next 2-3 years are probably going to be difficult to watch as the roster is torn down and rebuilt. Not a quick fix type situation. Contracts will have to be restructured and, failing that, some surprise veteran cuts will have to be made. There are maybe 10-15 'untouchables' currently on the roster; everyone else is expendable.

Can't stop the run, can't stop the pass, can't run the ball, can't protect the QB. To be a legit defense they need at minimum 5 starters on that side of the ball.
They were missing AJ, Ogbonnia, Cov, JC, and Bosa.
AJ was such a key piece of the D line, quietly having an outstanding season. We know what Bosa does—when he’s able to play. (Perhaps someone can do an availability analysis; I’d be curious what that shows.)

Not sure how you address that other than replacing the guy who finds the players. 10 years is enough. Staley I could go either way with. Especially now that Payton seems like he is off the table for us anyway.

Rather than yapping about quality players like Allen and Bosa that we should trade just because they got injured, I think the focus should be on replacing the players that always sucked like K9, Rumph, and some others.
