I get it, but injuries are being much more credit than they're worth on the defense. JC Jackson wasn't playing well even before they got injured. Neither was the interior Dline. Honestly they haven't been missing much up front with the rotation of Fehoko, Gaziano, & Davidson lately. Those guys can hold up. I've watched this area extremely close because I still have PTSD from the '09 interior Dline AJ trotted out there with Nwagbuo & Vaughn Martin. Poor tackling from the linebackers & secondary (mainly ASJ) is mainly responsible for the poor run defense. That wouldn't change much with Bosa back. I will say if Joseph-Day misses extended time that can hurt them, not so much because he's doing anything others aren't capable of but due to depth. Fehoko isn't a guy you want out there 10 to 12 snaps in a row. He'll get worn down.

The injuries have had much more of an impact on the offensive side of the ball.

      Thats the thing.

Staley is young and inexperienced when he was hired, in fact had never been a head coach at ANY level. But defence was supposed to be his calling card. Two years of defences at the very bottom of the NFL.

He talked a big game, but it is getting really hard to surmise he has the chops as an NFL head coach at this time

Dean and JohnBoy probably thought he was bringing Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey with him

I didn't like the names the Spanii interviewed to begin with. I knew I didn't want Joe Brady or Arthur Smith for sure. The rest of the names below - and the guy I wanted most off this list is still the guy they should have gawd damn hired!! Brian Daboll. At the time, just thought Staley was way too inexperienced.

        Bieniemy
        Garrett
        Daboll
        Saleh
        Staley
        Eberflus

Yes I thought with Telesco knowing Daboll from their past and being an offensive guru to work with their young franchise QB and get the most out of him was the clear and obvious choice as most others did. Staley was a bit of a shock.

Because if you are a good team you should run 3 deep pro bowlers at every position. Or at least I have been told this here.

But isn’t that the fundamental issue here? He isn’t the DC—he’s the HC. And by trying to do both jobs he’s failing at both. He should have brought in solid experience at the coordinator positions. But he didn’t. That’s on him as HC. I give him credit for replacing the ST coordinator. But he should have done the same for at least DC after last year.

I dont believe in losing to improve our draft position but totally agree about the part about how bad we look. The losses just look so bad and inept. Even the wins dont look like convincing wins. Not many wins have been where we played well throughout.

No but there is a glaring difference with how the contending teams are dealing with injuries, how they add real players to overcome injuries instead of takiing the cheap route and trotting out inexperienced, unqualified players off the pratcise squad.

Like lets put the well being of our franchise QB, just comiung off a major injury, in the hands of a practise squad player with 1 career start against Maxx Crosby. Because we still emply Storm Norton and have known he is totally usless and unplayable for a year now

Herbert would never do this but he should have walked into Telesco and Spanos office today and told them both to fuck off after the beating he took yesterday

That was a shame. Nutcracker was glorious, my entire family beamed with pride as our youngest angel just killed it as Clara.

Alas, the DVR replay was quite a disappointment. Our OL just got worked all game long. Surprising they were able to hold within 7 given how horrid the OL played. Not to get personal, but it was so far beyond a Contain Crosby thing - there is not much to do when the QB is met by 3 or 4 defenders within 2 seconds every play.

sigh —- another missed year. Its not to be, i fear. We still have a chip and a chair, lets play it out, but my glasses are not rose colored as i like to paint them each year. Go beat Mia, one step at at a time … see what happens. 25% odds to reach the tourney was the avg for 6-6 teams. Great banter here on TPB, tanks all for … all.

There are no other teams in the NFL that have come close to the Chargers in the quantity and quality of the players injured.

I don’t know all the stats on all the players on all the other teams, i can’t do a ranked tragedy Pareto chart. But the Chargers had a specific strategy for 2022, and injuries attacked the beating core of every single part of that strategy:

                          2 elite Edge - pfft
                          1 elite DB - whoosh
Retain key WR talent - sploosh
1 OG to build upper tier OL - kaboom!!!
Cement the interior DL - splat

Its fair to note that some groups did not have adequate “next up bench talent. Edge is a glaring example, cannot have just 2 effective outside rushers in modern football. LB group; was not adequately addressed in hindsight though its reasonable to think K9 and Tranqgun would have worked more effectively.

But the devastation to the key groups above basically returned Chargers from possible/unseen contender to mid-pack average team, which is what we have. Why the OL was so poor yesterday can be debated, but we were playing spots 6, 7, 8 on the depth chart. The two starters were the least effective of the 5 we counted on. We don’t have a horrible team, we still had a shot to tie in the 4th. We are just not in the championship group of elites that maybe we would be if our best players could play. Shame.

What i see when they play is 1x1 hat on hat battles lost - i don’t see grand scheme mistakes. Sure, a blown call or adjustment here or there but thats not the real story. The real story is the play after play competition of 11 guys against 11 guys. I don’t buy that simply a different scheme and guys getting beat in 1x1 block and tackle drills will suddenly become better at blocking and tackling - it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Players are put in the positions, they just don’t make enough of the plays.
