GET REAL!!! Total BS about “honor your contract.”These aren’t balanced contracts, they are skewed in favor of the teams. The teams can cut players and end the contract whenever they want. Ek is approaching it the right way. He’s played under the contract that he signed and has been as reliable and valuable as any player on the team. He hasn’t bitched and complained about it. He continues to work his ass off and be a model player and person. This is the time that EVERY player works with their team on extensions. He’s sitting here with one year left and no guaranteed money. He’d be foolish to not be working with the team on contract extension. The two sides don’t agree on what the $$ should be for the extension, so they let Ek explore the market. I actually think both sides are approaching it professionally and I expect they will figure it out. Ek is a class act and is the type of player and person you want to keep around.Originally posted by Topcat View Post
^ This. Ekkie knew what he was doing when he signed that $24 mil four-year extension with a $6 mil signing bonus in 2020...he's lucky the Bolts signed him as a FA and gave him the chance to even play in the NFL...PLAY OUT YER CONTRACT, DUDE!!!
(Oh, and don't pull a Moaning Mel either, or I'll start calling u "Extravagant Ekkie"...)

Agree.....which means we would be stuck with Fieler and no cap savings if everybody is honoring the contracts.Originally posted by RockyMtnBoltFan View Post

I'll give u that...that Ekkie hasn't complained like Moaning Mel did...yet...still, $24 mil for 4 years isn't chump change...Originally posted by RockyMtnBoltFan View Post

Of course not chump change for 99.9% of the world. And I’m not saying anyone should feel sorry for him. But he has been awesome and I completely understand his perspective. He’s outperformed his contract and the Chargers got a great deal…chalk one up for TT. I just hope they figure out a reasonable compromise.Originally posted by Topcat View Post

Um, that just shows Ekeler signed a bad contract. Watson got his contract guaranteed, he also was happy to take the signing bonus money, that the team had to pay regardless of the cut him. It’s not as lopsided as you make it out to be.Originally posted by RockyMtnBoltFan View Post

Um…yes it is. You are citing like the one and only multi-year deal that has been fully guaranteed in the history of the NFL. 99.99% of NFL contracts aren’t that.Originally posted by Budsman View Post

I don’t even think it’s fair to say Ekeler signed a bad contract. At the time it seemed like a fair deal for all parties. he’s just been awesome and outperformed the deal. Good problem to have…now they need to see if they can make the $$ work for a couple more years. If not, he’ll play his final year and find a new team. Just business…I just don’t like how people mid-cast Ekeler as a greedy, selfish villain in the situation.

No one thinks he’s a greedy selfish villain that’s hyperbolic.Originally posted by RockyMtnBoltFan View Post

He signed a contract that he thought was fair, he was paid bonus money up front. If he stunk does the team get to recoup his bonus money?

No they don’t get back the bonus money but they could have cut him and “honored the contract” as you put it. It’s a very one sided system for most players in the nfl. Especially compared to other sports leagues like MLB and NBA where the money is guaranteed. NFL is just different. And Ekeler is in a very tough spot because he’s an RB in the nfl which is the most devalued position. Truth is he was worth more than Bosa or Keenan last year probably more than Mike. If you worked at a place where you were much more productive than other people but got paid 1/3 or 1/4 of what they did wouldnt you want more? I sure as shit wouldOriginally posted by Budsman View Post

Also I understand why the Chargers do not want to extend based on the players they brought back. Personally, have sait before, I would have moved on from Bosa and Allen and probably extended Davis and Ekeler.
At this point - not sure what to do with Ekeler. Can't have another Melvin Gordon so probably am more likely wanting to trade him just to avert that
