I give JH1 credit in that he found uses for a MEH player like Matlock. You can't make wine from lemons.
I also think the Defense was better than it's parts. Individually they were not a great group. But they played better than that. Cudos to the coaches again.
With more talent it will be interesting to see the make up.

I think at minimum Klotz will make the 53 as a core STs player. No one is really talking about the STs but there is a big turnover a STs from last year. Plus, Matlock and Tuli are likely at minimum are going to have their snaps reduce to not being on STs at all. Mickens and Bridges will also likely be core STs at the start.

I would also add the Chargers ST unit was the worst when compared to the playoff teams last year. It is an area that needed to be overhauled, and I think at least on paper they upgraded that unit this year. We just have to see how it plays out on the field.

He doesn't HAVE TO put defenders on their backs in order to achieve his purpose: he just has to prevent them from making the tackle, or from getting to a particular lane.

Considering that Klotz will be going up against a considerably higher caliber of competition in the NFL, his pancake ratio will undoubtedly decrease. But that doesn't mean he can't be effective. Pancaking defenders isn't the goal, after all, preventing the runner from being tackled *IS* the goal.

Klotz obviously possesses the necessary 'love of contact' to get the job done. Can't wait to see him in preseason games.
He has a tendency to grab and toss, a few of those would have been Holding calls in NFL.

He also uses his momentum from motion to blast into defenders. NFL linebackers will yell "olay"

But talk about a high motor! I definitely like this kid and hope he sticks.

I'd go with 9 and be happy with that

on a Harbaugh team, I think pancakes are the preferred outcome. One of the final goals is that nobody wants to see the Chargers on their schedule.

the frequency of Klotz assignments buried underneath him as the ball carrier goes through or by is astounding. there is a genuine zeal and enthusiasm for that job. then again, its a highlight reel - I didn't watch the 800 other offensive plays that Iowa State ran last year. ISU had a fantastic year last year, they were a legit B12 power.

you are right, he doesn't have to pancake his NFL defender on every play. He can seldom or never pancake them for all I care - just make the fucking block. right on, Q. The key question is can he play like his tape against NFL caliber players. Idunno but my spidey hunch is the blocking we see in that tape is hella better than the blocking we saw from Mat and Fisk. But ... not NFL players and Mat could get better ... so we wait to see.

we'll start to get an idea in ... 6 weeks?

He’s only been Robin because Mack and Bosa have been in front of him. They have never had to put the time on ST in their career at any point like Tuli has. I think Kennard’s game compliments Tuli nicely moving forward. He’s the speed to Tuli’s power. I’m sure this year Kennard will focus more on his run D. I just think Tuli runs out of gas towards the end of the season when playing 300+ snaps on ST. I think that snap count will be cut at least in half.

He definitely blows up smaller or equal sized players.

He (holds) tackles well, 😀 looks to be a ST demon.

    Plays with force!
