And the 17 class has been snake bitten by injuries - wonder what lamp would have been without that major knee injury.... But with classes like these the quality of our depth is thinning - I am curious what this board thinks - but seems like our drafts have plateaued and now are not as good. Hopefully he can get that turned around again.
2019 (28th) below avg
2018 (17th) avg
2017 (7th) above avg
2016 (3rd) above avg
2015 (15th) avg
2014 (23rd) below avg
2013 (11th) avg
think when you look on the whole of things, team Tommy John has been pretty much.... avg.
one thing that seems to plague them a bit, is that not only do they mostly refrain from drafting linemen early, and when they do they largely miss, save for Joey.
or is it just as much or more a question of development, not to mention injury prevention/strength and conditioning ??
they could stand to learn how to better stockpile draft picks and to be awarded a comp pick every now and then as well.
personally, and it is difficult given the temptation of overtly talented skill position players, am an advocate/believer in drafting linemen early and often.
would also volunteer to play it safe when considering drafting injury concerns, and side w/players more oft who have a solid durability history thru their collegiate career.
and forget trading up.... your scouting eye has to be able to bring in talent at all levels of the draft.... (the other contending teams do).
we have to do better in FA, and have a better sense of where to allocate our position group dollars, i.e. linemen/front seven.
not sure we've plateaued.... more like we've got the same mtn to climb.... (which may be to be expected given the relative youth of team Tommy John ?)
judging by the above chronology, and if we end up picking in the teens, do think it not unlikely to expect another avg draft by the Chargers.5/11 Fuaga, 37 Kamari Lassiter, 40 Sinnott, 67 Bralen Trice, 69 Cedric Gray, 105 Jaylen Wright, 110 Braelon Allen, 140 Joe Milton, 181 Khristian Boyd, Tylan Grable, 225 Daijun Edwards, 253 Miyan Williams

Analytics types who study it have determined that long term, there is no particular skill via the draft. Some teams like NE do better at acquiring talent, but that isn't the same thing. NE has done a good job of developing players and then being able to either trade or translate those former picks into future picks. But they also have a lot of luck in finding trade partners and trading down out of the 1st round and trading late round pick into 2nd/3rd picks, that they turn into quality players. But percentage-wise NE misses on their picks as often as everyone else.
As far as the D this year, it is just a lot of bad things coming together at once. We have dumped the previous DT and now we are suffering from inexperience. I think we have good prospects who flash enough to make me think we will be fine going forward, but we have some lumps to take before they develop.
The LB are a big part of the problem. Davis is showing his age, and is slow to adapt to the new D. He is putting up a lot of tackles, but he is a step slow, and is not making the plays at the line like he has for his career. The rest of the LB flash ability, but no one stands out.
The big thing to remember is that we are not playing the same D that we have been the last few years. We are being stuck in a nickel D, which has plain made us much slower D that in the past 2 years. We don't have the same aggressive play at S, and that makes the middle of our D weak. Those are the players that can have an impact on any play, and teams can avoid our edge players, minimizing their impact.
As far as Ingram goes, I wouldn't call him a blitzer. He is best as an inside pass rusher, but since we aren't blitzing, that label is poor. He is basically playing the old Joker/Rover rush position from the Pagano D. We are using him to move around and gain mismatches. Right now, it is forcing teams to adjust their blocking, and it is freeing up Bosa. However, in time teams will start to ignore the mismatches that Ingram has, and leave the extra blockers outside (more often) to stop Bosa, and Ingram's production will rise. But none of it matters much unless the DT can keep the LB clean and exploit single blocking in the pass rush.

Tillery will Prob need a year before we find out if he’s worth a Rd1. Interior DL seems to be one of those positions that sometimes takes a full season under their belt to get the hang of the jump from NCAA to NFL.“Less is more? NO NO NO - MORE is MORE!”

Im really liking Bosa on the same side of the field as Ingram.
Plus with Rochelle on the other end thats a pretty good trio right there. I know they won't run that all the time but the one thing they can't do is double team both of them so Bosa or Ingram is always going to be one on one on someone.

I thought Tillery looked good today. When you see our DEs in the backfield you see Tillery taking on a C and OG. He was needing 2 OL at times. Which is something you want to see because that will open things up for Bosa and Ingram. I like this kids future.
