    Then... and now.
I agree but we could certainly have used them as back-ups.

The kind of money jones and nwosu got in FA only a handful of NFL teams pay backups like that…

I'll ask what I asked before about Nwosu - why does anything think he'd sign here to be a backup when could be a starter somewhere else?

That's a valid question. I imagine few would but it's possible that a player likes where he's living, doesn't want to move far away, and has many great friends on the team. If so, maybe some would stay put if the price seems right. Remember this, when they sign with the other team it doesn't guarantee they will be starters.

              He’d be a starter here

                Really? Over Mack and Bosa?

Aaron Schatz, inventor of DVOA, points out that Broncos, Eagles, Patriots are at the top in pass defense but towards the bottom in run defense.

Conclusion: in modern NFL defensive scheme, you get to choose your poison.

Ripened StaleyD will not look like '85 Bears.
We do not play modern football.

Every dollar you spend this year... will be a dollar you can't spend next year.
                    Winter is coming...
The LA Chargers just got the price tag for a future Justin Herbert extension and it is over half a billion dollars.

He would not have been at the beginning of the year with Mack and Bosa on the roster.

Bosa hasn’t played since the first half of game 3. So he’d be the starter for 6.5 games which will reach 9.5 -10.5 games. Also the plan was to rotate those guys to keep them fresh

That’s a good point, but his desire to stay in LA combined with the chargers matching what seattle gave him, IDK, that might’ve swayed him to stick around knowing that he was still going to get a crap ton of playing time spelling mack and bosa, much like he did when joey and melvin were the leading guys…didn’t the rams have that same situation with Leonard when they signed von miller? there is the a strong possibility that staley would’ve had joey inside with both mack and nwosu outside on passing downs too…but did the chargers even make him an offer or perhaps tell him they’d be willing to match Seattle's offer? That’s the big question, because they obviously told him that they’d be looking for more edge help…
