Jones probably thinks Lance is a future starter in the NFL who was drafted by a team he didn't fit with. If Lance is that guy this is a great move, because Jones could receive better draft picks for Lance than what he traded to get him if Lance doesn't replace Dak. Unfortunately for Jones, I don't believe Lance is that guy. It looks like North Dakota State is not the quarterback factory many were making it out to be.

I just looked at what the 49ers ultimately gave up for Lance. It's not as bad when you see two of the three first-round picks ended up being at the bottom of the first round. It's still a bad trade, but the 29th overall pick often ends up like Jerry Tillery.

            49ers get:
            • 2021 first-round pick (No. 3 overall)

            Dolphins get:
            • 2021 first-round pick (No. 12 overall)
            • 2022 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)
            • 2022 third-round pick (No. 101 overall)
            • 2023 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)

Dolphins traded the 2021 (#12) to trade up to #6 for Jaylen Waddle.
They used the 2022 (#29) to trade for Tyreek Hill.
They used the 2023 (#29) to trade for Bradley Chubb.

              Dolphins did OK.

That 2021 (#12) pick ended up being Micah Parsons... ouch!

Yeah, that is true, although I don't think the 49ers would have made those moves. I just noticed that, since getting hired in 2017, Lynch and Shanahan have had some really bad draft picks in the first round.

                2017: Solomon Thomas, Reuben Foster
                2018: Mike McGlinchey
                2020: Javon Kinlaw
                2021: Trey Lance

To be fair, they also drafted Nick Bosa (second overall) and Brandon Aiyuk (25th overall) in the first round, and they have gotten gems from the second round on--most notably Deebo Samuel (second), Fred Warner (third), George Kittle (fifth), and Brock Purdy (seventh). Interesting.

But, yeah, if they had stayed where they were and drafted Micah Parsons or our very own Rashawn Slater they would be a lot better off. No matter how you look at it, trading three first-round picks for Lance is embarrassingly bad.

On the other hand the Dolphins have seemingly done great work with the picks they got from the 49ers. It's just not as noticeable because they drafted Tua over Herbert in 2020.

After breaking his finger, Trey Lance still has a crooked index finger that won’t straighten out, affecting his throwing mechanics. The Ravens are practically the only team that have designed QB running plays. God knows why the 49er’s ever envisioned becoming that type of offense. It worked for awhile with the Panthers. Cam Newton looked like an awesome futuristic prototype for awhile. Cam’s body eventually took too much damage in that type of offense. I suspect Lamar Jackson will have a similar expiration date.

Pro Football Focus generally hasn’t been a fan of Arnold’s blocking ability throughout his career, although the site has given him solid grades for his receiving skills.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
