Shelly Sterling no longer owns any piece of the Clippers, but here is what she does still get as part of this sale.

        • Official title of “owner emeritus”
        • Official title of “Clippers No. 1 fan”
        • Two courtside tickets for all Clippers home games
        • Ten tickets in the good seats in the lower bowl of Staples Center for all Clippers home games
        • A dozen VIP passes to the luxury lounges (or media room) for all Clippers home games
        • Six parking passes for every Clippers home game
        • Three championship rings should the Clippers win a title

Why is that disturbing? Because Shelly Sterling is far from clean in all of Donald Sterling filth.

Shelly Sterling shows up all over some of the housing discrimination lawsuits filed against Sterling. She allegedly posed as a government inspector to both find out what race the tenants of their buildings were and to harass some of them. While this was all going on she said her husband was not a racist to the cameras.

That Shelly Sterling is remaining a part of the organization isn't a surprise. There was an expectation that she'd end up maintaining her seats and even having some sort of ceremonial role throughout the process. But giving all this is more than was expected.

And it's really troubling because Shelly Sterling was often an accomplice to Donald Sterling's deplorable behavior. She often worked in tandem with her ex-husband, posing as a health inspector to illegally enter tenants' apartments. She's also been caught uttering racist remarks to her tenants over the past decade, as Deadspin and the Los Angeles Times detailed. One building manager suggested in 2004 that she wanted to force out certain ethnicities if they had children because they "didn't fit the image." Another testified in 2009 that she said Latinos were "filthy."

Owner Emeritus and Clippers No. 1 fan:

-In 2003, a court order noted Sterling was accused of "regularly [posing] as a government official in order to gain access to tenants' apartments." Video later emerged of her pretending to be a health inspector to illegally enter one apartment.

-In a 2004 deposition, a property supervisor testified that Shelly Sterling wanted to evict tenants from "certain ethnic groups" that had children. "She didn't want — if they were playing in the hallway, if they were out hanging in front of the building, they didn't fit the image."

-In 2006, one African-American tenant accused Shelly Sterling of making "inflammatory remarks...on several occasions," including calling him a "black motherfucker."

-In 2009, a building manager testified that Shelly Sterling made comments disparaging Hispanic tenants. "She said, 'Oh, my God. This is so filthy. I can't remodel my apartments the way that I want because Latinos are so filthy.'"

In the 1970s, Sterling got to know Jerry Buss, then a chemist who was also an LA real estate investor. In May 1979, Buss was set to buy the Lakers, but 15 hours before the purchase deadline he was still $2.7 million shy of the needed cash. So he called Sterling, who covered part of the shortfall by buying a group of 11 Santa Monica apartment buildings from Buss. Soon after, the San Diego Clippers were on the block, and Buss suggested his pal buy them. And so in 1981, Sterling acquired the franchise for $12.7 million.
Lakers star Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for a gay slur that commissioner David Stern called "offensive and inexcusable."

Your hypocrisy and uselessness are noted.

Owner emeritus? Rochelle “Shelly” Sterling didn’t know what her new title with the Los Angeles Clippers technically meant, so maybe she didn’t anticipate the upcoming backlash of also being named her former team’s “No. 1 fan.” Initial thinking was that delusion must run in the family, but to be honest no one really knew the meanings of those titles until her list of rewards for finishing off Donald Sterling’s stint as an owner were revealed to the public.

As part of her appreciation package, Shelly was granted VIP access, 12 tickets — including two courtside seats — and three championship rings from any successful Clippers NBA Finals run.

This is as if banking at least half of Steve Ballmer’s $2 billion wasn’t enough for a womanwho, by all accounts, was just as guilty of discriminating against Blacks and Hispanics as her “estranged” husband.

This is the same estranged husband who she posed as a health inspector for, supported and was caught on camera defending when his racist tapes came to light. He’s also the same estranged husband who the Wall Street Journal quoted Shelly as saying she believed would eventually be allowed to join her in one of those gifted seats on the floor.

I don’t know about you, but this does not sound like some innocent 80-year-old woman who deserves to be celebrated — regardless of her help in bouncing Donald out of power. The truth of the matter is that she only did it because the national media began to give her a little heat for warning the league that she would pursue lawsuits to keep her ownership stake in Los Angeles’ new kings.

That’s not a saint — that’s an opportunist who never ever publicly repented for her alleged wrongdoings at the expense of minorities. In the end, it’s a win for the Sterling family. They get to pad their pockets, plot their next mission for attention and eventually enjoy the spoils of ultimate success, if it ever comes.

Now what kind of punishment is that?

Apparently racist comments can quickly increase the worth of your brand as much as 200%. Good for sales. Have the Kardashian Kunts figured this angle out yet?

Why would there be a relationship between the two? If the Grand Wizard of the KKK owned the Hope Diamond, his affiliation would have literally no bearing on the demand for and market value of his asset.

ANAHEIM – They were close, this close to getting it right.

That’s not an indictment, not when we’re talking about the Clippers, a franchise as historically well intentioned yet futile as non-alcoholic beer.

Coming close is a victory for this team, which, on the court, still never has been particularly close to everything of consequence.

When the Clippers were sold away from Donald Sterling on Tuesday, the news was greeted with uncorked joy.

Center DeAndre Jordan called it “a great day.” So did forward Blake Griffin. Coach Doc Rivers talked of being “inspired.”

One fan tweeted “NOW IT’S PARTY TIME!!!” and when Clipper Darrell goes all-caps you know he’s serious.

Triumphantly, the Clippers officially rid themselves of their racist former owner. But the noisy euphoria and happy chaos that followed helped muffle the fact the name Sterling isn’t going anywhere.

The mess has been cleaned up, but the stain left behind will remain, indelible, as obvious as an outline of red wine on white shag. They were close, this close.

Instead, Shelly Sterling will still be right there – sitting courtside, hanging in the fancy in-arena lounges and, if the Clippers ever do win an NBA title, receiving three championship rings.

I’ve seen Shelly Sterling several times, up close even, but somehow never noticed she had three ring fingers. That’s something you’d think would be obvious.

As part of this sale to Steve Ballmer, Shelly was given those perks and others, experts explaining that these kinds of bonuses occur all the time in big-money negotiations.

And here I foolishly thought that Shelly receiving a share of Ballmer’s $2 billion – a figure accepted as roughly four times what the Clippers actually are worth – would be payment enough.

Instead, Shelly and her own well-chronicled history of intolerance will be permitted to stay in the Clippers family, the matriarch of this madness sticking entirely too close to a situation that the NBA wants us to believe has been sanitized.

Remember, all this started because Donald Sterling’s well-chronicled history of intolerance finally became too seedy and sexy for the league to continue to ignore. Once exposed, Sterling was vilified by only all of America, the Clippers becoming the biggest story in the country.

No one believed he should be allowed to remain as owner. Sponsors pulled out. Fans boycotted. Players protested, even one of the Clippers’ opponents suggesting they were going to exit the court immediately before tipoff.

Adam Silver roared in, part new commissioner and part new sheriff, vowing in loud and direct language to vanquish the evils of racism, his moving crusade landing him on the cover of Sports Illustrated, where he was captured in an impossibly iconic portrait.

Yet, here’s Shelly now incredibly being bestowed with the titles of “No. 1 Fan For Life” and “Owner Emeritus,” titles that have no real influence but couldn’t be more impactful.

She’s being paraded as some sort of savior – the person who ultimately forced Donald Sterling out – when she should be quietly accepting Ballmer’s money and, like her husband, going away.

I can’t be the only person who finds the level of hypocrisy in this situation staggering. Even in the greedy, grimy world of big-time sports, this story leaves a layer of filth.

Perhaps not coincidently, Shelly has been given a lifetime pass by the very NBA owners she – early in this controversy, when it appeared she also could be permanently banned – not so vaguely accused of being sexist.

Shelly officially will have zero to do with running the Clippers and her presence, at worst, should be nothing more than a blink of a distraction.

But wouldn’t it have been easier, wouldn’t it have been a more genuine fresh start, to completely wash away the name Sterling?

When an ownership entity is deemed monstrous enough to be forcibly removed, shouldn’t the desire be to forever eliminate all connections to that entity?

Hey, if it was only an additional payout Shelly wanted, Ballmer has the money, right? When you’re willing to overspend like he just did, what’s a few more million to ensure a nice clean break?

Instead, the Clippers will return next season with Shelly sitting courtside, their “Owner Emeritus” who, according to court documents from cases involving the Sterlings’ housing developments, routinely has disparaged minorities and practiced discrimination.

Hardly seems like the behavior a team would accept from its “No. 1 Fan For Life.” In fact, such behavior has been known to upset players and coaches, lead to protests and boycotts and even result in expulsion from the NBA.

Apparently, it’s OK, though, if that’s what it costs to get rid of a Donald Sterling, an odor evidently so enormous that it can’t be removed without leaving a lingering stink.
