I think we need to continue drafting lineman every single year. What we need most is an oline coach who can get the young players to develop. The Pipkins injury is a wildcard that might force us the draft someone earlier than wanted.

Draft two and sign two...I'm just not crazy about drafting one at #5 this year unless they're a monster prospect.

Then later on he had Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Hunter Henry, Melvin Gordon (people can laugh all they want, but he was good from 2016-2018), Austin Ekeler, and an old Antonio Gates. After Marcus McNeill's career ended prematurely, and Kris Dielman was finished, the offensive lines in front of Rivers were absolute disasters. After that it was Jared Gaither, King Dunlap, Russell Okung (who was decent), and Trent Scott at left tackle. The right tackle spot was also never figured out, with Jeromey Clary hanging on much longer than he ever should have, followed by D.J. Fluker (drafted way too high and belonged at guard, where he was just OK), Joseph Barksdale, and Sam Tevi.

But, yeah, let's not consider the possibility of Joe Alt or Olu Fashanu at all because it has to be Brock Bowers or Malik Nabers. Lol.

Chargers have consistently built team with skill players and ignore continue to do the trenchwork. Why would we keep trying that formula? KC traded Tyreek Hill and invested in OL and then they win Superbowl the very next season with one of the best OL in the league. I thought this was a copy cat league. Who are we copying by drafting more skill player in Rd1. Telesco with Williams, Gordon, QJ. We just fired that philosophy.

They also struck gold with Pacheco (huge upgrade to their running game) and brought in Juju Smith-Schuster as key FA signing (who had 900+ receiving yards).

So it's not like they turned into the 1980s Redskins with power football. They still had speed to burn.

Rivers got 2 1st round WR in 17 years. Craig Davis and MIke Williams when he was old. Gates was a lucky UDFA. What skill players was Rivers being blessed with? A couple of RBs? Those are needed.

Look at the data on Aiyuk. That guy would be really good with Herbert well as long as Harbaugh is HC and he hires a strong OC.

That is something that Allen has not had one 50 yard TD in his career. Gordon got that 88 yarder against the Patriots. Ekeler got a big one against the Rams in 2022.

I think they are in consideration. From a value standpoint at pick 5, I think the 4 players that hold that value are Fashanu, Alt, Nabors, Bowers. Without a trade down or top 4 surprises I would guess the Chargers pick is one of these 4 players

We've used 2 of our last 3 1st round picks on OL. Signed a big money FA center. Hardly ignoring OL.

We have largely ignored playmakers. QJ was supposed to be that but we haven't used a first on a playmaker since MW in 2017.

You taking about 2 drafts.
I'm talking about decades of roster building.
Since 1987. 36 years. 32 first Rd picks and only 3 picked in Rd 1. And it took Telesco draft in 2013, 2021 and 2022 just to get that number to 3 OL.

3 out of 32. 29 times other units were added to.
You only started 1 RB, 2 CBs, 2 or sometimes 3WR or two TE.
But you always start 5 OL. Always. And all they could do was 3 times in 32 1st Rd picks to upgrade that unit.

So we need a guy who catches a lot of 50-yard touchdown passes when we're inside the 20? How was Antonio Gates able to catch 116 touchdown passes in his career, with years of 13, 12, 10, 10, 9, and 9 touchdown receptions without being a weapon?

Williams is a weapon...problem is as a fourth tire that goes flat our offense veers off into the ditch. Three insane playmakers in this years receiver core plus additional supporting cast receivers that will become NFL work horses. Better to just whip out the check book for a RB this season and draft receivers and linemen.
