You're saying players like Robert Meachem and Jonas Mouton and David Molk and Larry English were never going to be playoff caliber?Originally posted by powderblueboy View Post
Who were pro bowlers by that stage? Rivers, Gates, Weddle & who? I hope you are not referring to washed up has beens.
Focusing on McCoy's team:
Other than Weddle, no one on that defense would start for this current squad. Maybe Liuget.
Remember Thomas Keiser? He was their sackmaster. He punched someone at a bar and got kicked out of football
...wish he packed that kind of pop on the gridiron
The cornerbacks were garbage - pure garbage. Who played opposite Weddle?
Dunlap, Fluker, Clary, Troutman.... didn't cause many sleepless night for defensive coordinators, I can assure you.
Lots of playmakers, i'll give you that....kind of like the last two years for this current squad.
But when 2/3rds of your team is crap + some playmakers, getting them to 500 is a really good job. Winning a playoff game with them was a miracle.
They came close to beating the AFC champion that year in the playoffs.

He just isnt the deep ball guy he used to be. This isnt me knocking Rivers...just his most recent year. He just threw it up more than he needed to. Causing me to throw up also. One of my favorite Bolts of all time. A true HOF for us.Originally posted by gzubeck View Post

Larry English once controlled a Division II OT with his left extended armOriginally posted by Velo View Post

Jonas Mouton once delivered a left hook to another college OT - AJ Smith was giddy when he saw that
David Molk was a midget center who constantly overcame this physical limitation to succeed in high school & in college at Michigan thru sheer effort
- he would use his head as a battering ram. This sheer determination finally ran out of steam in the NFL game.
- Robert Meachem couldn't catch a cold on the Chargers. He finally returned to New Orleans and he once again picked up his game after picking AJ Smith's pocket.

After AJ let Vincent Jackson sign with Tampa, AJ signed Meachum and Eddie Royal and tried to sell it as getting two playmakers at WR in place of VJ. That was his final year as GM.

Kind of like how AJ let Donnie Edwards go, and claimed Whiffhelm would wow us...Originally posted by Velo View Post

Oh man, I remember that. AJ had a grudge against Edwards because Edwards was beefing about a new contract early in 2006. He let his grudge enter his decision-making when he let Edwards walk and elevated Whiffhelm. To me, that move was the beginning of the decline of the Chargers after they had peaked talent-wise in 2006. Everybody likes to say Norv inherited the most talented team in the NFL when he took over as HC in 2007, but actually the defense took a big hit when Whiffhelm was out there instead of Donnie. Edwards led the team in INTs for a couple of seasons, including 2006, if I remember correctly.Originally posted by Topcat View Post
