Cap hell just means limited movements financially. The Saints were the closest to true cap hell because they keep kicking Brees’ contract down the road until he retired. Not sure what they’re doing now since they’re nowhere close to competing. But yeah, smarter teams like the Chiefs are pulling back this year to let things settle since Mahome’s contract just went up. They’ll be back at it again next offseason.

Edit: But yeah as equivocation mentioned, it greatly helps that the cap keeps going up. Think about what happened during 2020 when it actually went down. It caused a lot of teams to scramble to stay under.

They let them walk and hope to get comp picks back to replenish the supply.

Hopefully that's us next year. We have a lot of guys on cheap expiring contracts. We go on a run and they're likely to get paid.

Do we get comp picks if they’ve only been on this team for one year?

I think so. NFL rules don't say anything about length of contract, just when they sign with another team ( before 4 PM Eastern on Monday following draft).

And the Rams aren’t in cap hell. Also it’s a little misleading to say they signed Wagner to a five year deal, when it’s really only 2 years for $10 million. Their biggest splashes were internally to try to free up cap space this year. It’s not really wonkers at all if you follow what they’ve been doing.

Chief's signed the guy from Green Bay for 3 years/ $30 million.....mid tier wide receiver makes a bit less than the Charger's big signing last year Linsley.

              Chargers didn't resign some players.

I followed MVS in GB. He’s a mid tier signing at best. But I suppose he’ll do okay with Mahomes as his QB. But he needs to solve his drops. It’s why he was a WR3 in GB at time. But I suppose $30 million is the going rate for WRs these days. I think only a fraction of that is guaranteed though. So it’s not that big of a financial commitment.

Like I said regarding the Wagner signing, it’s a 2 year deal for $10 million. Guarantees are the key factor. Maybe we would have gone after him if Staley didn’t care more about DBs over LBs.

Yes but they still need to get a contract that qualifies. Doubt Denver will get a pick for losing Callahan at the league vet minimum.

That’s what Belicheat does. Sign a quality vet for a year, let him walk after that and get a comp pick for him. Very smart.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

For a long time, NE was a place where an aging but still productive vet wanted to go, knowing it was really a one year rental but with a good shot at a ring. Now - NE isn’t even the best team in the division. Aging vets know whats up and it was never a love for Belly that got them there. It was a ring. I think you’ll see less vets eager to under-sign with NE for awhile now.

If Chargers put it all together this year, and show strength going forward, they can hold that plus factor when vets are pondering what their next step will be and whether they’d rather get that ring or get some extra $. Some will pick ring, others $.

The 49's were in cap hell for about a decade.

Once their cheating came out (this ruined the Chargers lone SB appearance) where they paid star players next to nothing and then would pay them big off the books, it was a disaster for the NFL. They went into overdrive to hide the scandal because the 49rs were a flagship franchise at that time. The NFL made them forfeit draft picks, kicked Policy out of the league, and took all the hidden money, dumped it on their cap over the next 10 years. That is why they were terrible for some 15 years after that SB. They had less draft picks and were in cap hell to boot so they could not sign FA's.

That is the reason I hate the 49'rs more than any other team, more that the Turds, Donkeys and Chefs.

Cowboys would have abused the Chargers that year in the Super Bowl, if not for the 9ers.
