I wonder if the past experiences with Koo and Lambo -- both cut and then they went on to perform better at their next stop -- have made them take this approach.

I don’t think you need that much accuracy to kick it through the end zone.

I think you underestimate kicking. Novak, McAfee, and others discuss it and kickoffs are not quite as easy as you think, especially given the ball's action. If you have been on the field during warmups -- I had the chance to chat with Carney about kickoffs back in the day (I can thank Bobby Beathard for the field passes)-- they are harder than you think. I mean, if it was easy, then anyone could do it, and kicks would never go out of bounds. It takes more than a strong leg is my point.

Now, I feel like a nerd because I've talked about kicking way more than I have ever wanted to!

I was thinking exactly this. And honestly not a bad idea, it’s a low risk/high reward move.
