I think Hopkins is better than Vizcaino but a bandaid solution, not a longterm one. At least he won’t miss the extra points at the same rate Vizcaino was missing them at.

But his %s aren’t anything stellar.

Really surprised they didn’t try to go with Verity. He’s young and was a potential longterm solution at the kicker position.

If Hopkins doesn’t last then I guess they will go with Fry since he kicked well in the workout as well
Tom Telesco’s Results in 9 years as Chargers GM:

    - 69-74 record
    - 0 division titles in 9 yrs as GM
    - Worst record among all active GMs with same tenure
    - 6th worst winning percentage among all active GMs overall
    - 2 playoff wins despite elite QB all 9 yrs
    - Team still has the same weaknesses (Oline and run defense) that it had when hired as GM in 2013
    - Consistently puts together horrible depth, expects starters to never miss games

Chargers should have taken the Costanza route and picked the Kicker they WEREN'T going to pick.

Yes, but there are a number of us here that think that it would be better for Hopkins to go for all TBs as our kickoff coverage seems to leave teams near the 25 give or take most of the time anyway and the concern for an injury and risk of a big return for no real demonstrated benefit is a questionable strategy with our special teams unit (versus a better unit).

I would be happy with 75-80% TBs.

Viz has a stronger leg than Hopkins so he would have had no problem getting touchbacks either. It’s a deliberate strategy by the coaching staff. Hence why Hopkins’ numbers will probably drop with us.

Getting a different kicker is positive. Keeping Vizcaino was not going to work. So got to acknowledge that.

Hopkins has the experience. So we can pick on his stats. The reason we can do that and not pick on Verity or Fry is that they don't have the years and seasons of experience Hopkins does. In a down year for kickers overall (outside of Tucker and Butker) Hopkins has been above average. Above average is a tremendous step up for our team. And hopefully, unlike Badgely and other inexperienced kickers, he has already experienced the lows of kicking and won't be crushed when he hits a rough spot. Like Badgely did. And Koo. And Vizcaino. Remember that just like Tucker has sung the praises of Verity, Vinaterri sung the praises of Badgely when he was on the Colts pre season roster. Kickers are such a frustrating roll of the dice. And we are snake bit, it seems.
